MechaCon wrap-up:

So I went to MechaCon this weekend was pretty fun. It was definitely a different experience, not sure I will go to another Anime convention versus a comic convention, but all around I learned alot. Was able to meet up with a friend of mine on Friday night, and we ended up going to the Cowboy Bebop 5th anniversary panel on Saturday morning.

Best parts of the trip by far were meeting Carl Macek and Tommy Yune. They looked at my portfolio and really liked it, and we got to have a pretty in-depth chat about the new Robotech movie. The new Robotech movie is going to be awesome. Toby mcguire as rick hunter,the writer of raiders of the lost ark, empire strikes back penning the script, and the producer of Batman Begins. What a movie this will be!

The other cool thing was the Cowboy Bebop panel, which was the first time the crew of the Bebop was together in one room. It was beyond awesome, everyone was in character, and it was like having those characters right next to you. They even put too rest the debate of is Spike dead,and yes hes dead, haha. The other thing they told us was the character Ed is a cartoon version of the real life music composer for Cowboy Bebop. The voice actors for the Bebop really loved the series and it showed, you could tell it was the best thing they have ever done so far in there careers.

Later on in the evening I got to meet Steve Blum (voice of Spike!) as he was going to the lobby in an elevator, and he recorded a cool message on a friend of mines phone.

The rest of the convention was kinda, meh. Dealer room was terrible and everything was overpriced. This one dealer was selling DVD’s and would swear everything he sold was out of print hence the jacked up prices. Yeah right,,, The main convention I tried to avoid as much as I could. Way too many teenagers without Parental supervision running around with as little clothes on as they could get away with, Very creepy to say the least. The Video rooms were nice, but the selection of anime they were showing wasn’t that good.

Artist alley was pretty lame. There was one artist there that was amazing though, she did these incredibly detailed ball point pen illustrations. I also talked to this one artist that did the cover for the MechaCon book who told me that basically my art was shit,and since I couldn’t do it all day I wasn’t serious about it. O well ,haha.

All around though was pretty fun. Next Stop Wizard World Texas in November!.

Comic cons are more my thing too...although I want to go to A-Kon in Dallas one year to see what a "real" anime con can be. Re: your art, everyone is a critic. An artist at work recently said to some other artists that he's the best artist at the company. Unfortunately for him it's not even close to the truth. Some artists are insecure and some are just a-holes. Your art is great, and you're developing a fun, unique style. See you Saturday, right?!
