Header: a summer mornings rant lol
Bulletin: okay folks,
time for tommy to have a tantrum! lol
below is a message left on digitalwebbing.com from
an obviously slightly disgruntled publisher

"if you READ the title carefully, then you shouldn't be having a misunderstanding and end up crying and sniveling about being paid for YOUR untested and RISKY idea to be published at someone ELSE'S(my) expense. any NON-CRYBABY creator teams please submit 6-pg packages before 6/27 to be considered for publication."

now, having felt the exact same way, a few times recently,
i posted this reply

"AMEN BROTHER!! LOL
i have taken out a few ads here in the past year or so,
and EVERY TIME i have stated VERY CLEARLY that i could NOT pay page rate,
and there were NO GUARANTEES,
back end possibilities ONLY

and EVERY SINGLE TIME i got replies from artists asking page rate,
lol
does anybody read the ad before applying for the job?!?

three or four different adds,
and at least half a dozen applicants each time
wasting my time by beginning the project, or at least exchanging several emails about said project, before announcing that they dont work for spec, or back end.

people,
READ THE AD VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE APPLYING!!!!

thats all for my rant. lol"

now let me say this,
digitalwebbing.com is a great resource!
i have found some wonderful collaborators through the site,
check out my timmy's treehouse folder,
ricardo augusto is an amazing talent, and a helluva nice guy.
very professional.
but it seems that,
for every roberto i find,
there are ten others, who look at an addlike this one

" Writer And Inker Looking For Penciller
If your looking for a page rate or guarantee,
look elsewhere, sorry
we are small press,
if profit is made it will be distributed fairly
thats the best we can do at the moment,

we are looking for a penciller that loves doing what we do,

established writer, and hard working inker,
seeking a penciller,

we are rebooting / revamping a project that was successful in the ninetees

gritty and realistic without using the "greg land" method

1990's image clones need not apply, lol

high contrast clean moody work

fans of
paul smith, george perez, frank miller,
vertigo comics, the ultimates line, all are good

send questions, or submissions to

SHAVERTOMM@gmail.com"

then apply for the job,
and in some cases, even start work on the pencils
before announcing "i don't work for spec"
or "i need my page rate"

what is the problem folks?!?
are artists just blindly applying for every add on digitalwebbing.com
without reading them?

or do they think that thier work is SO INCREDIBLE that the publisher will change thier rules for just that one guy?

the comics industry is not at it's best right now,
a lot of fine companies are a bit strapped for cash,
small press is not the place to make a living right now.

in my opinion, thats not neccessarily a bad thing,
it weeds out the folks that don't love the business,

the guy's and gals that live on top ramen noodles,
so they can afford new pens, or a new ink cartraige for thier printer,

the folks that save for a month or two, so they can get a table at the next local convention.

the people that do laundry at moms house, despite the fact that they are 32 years old,
because the 10 to 20 bucks they save,
can be spent on the more important things,
art board, or the new issue of secret invasion, or fables. lol

there are too many unrealistic dreams out there.
don't stop dreaming,
but let a little bit of reality leak in from time to time.
do a few jobs that don't pay as much,or at all,
get more stuff published,
pad that resume!

do some work purely for the love of the medium!

draw my damned story!!! lol

there are too many young talented, undiscovered artists and writers out there doing disservice to themselves,
not getting much work because they want every job to pay.

dave sim was broke for years,
jim lee didn't make money right from the start,
brian micheal bendis labored in the small press for a long time, before he became the icon he is today.

don't let greed become a stumbling block.

i wouldn't mind making a living in this business,
but i would much rather do good work, and get it published,
than to only take 2 or three paying gigs a year,
and still be poor.

the days of the millionaire comic creator are long gone.
maybe they will return, who knows,
but thats not why i do what i do.

i love the business,
i want to make it a better place,
i want a head full of hair, and washer board abs,

not all of those things are within my power, lol
but i'm trying my damnedest.

thats my rant.
everybody can go back to looking at german beastiality porn now.
lol
