THE ARCHIE PREQUEL “FRESHMAN YEAR” GETS IN FULL SWING IN ARCHIE #588!

THE ARCHIE PREQUEL “FRESHMAN YEAR” GETS IN FULL SWING IN ARCHIE #588!

In the tradition of such famous comic book series and mini-series as John Byrne’s “Superman: the Man of Steel,” Frank Miller’s “Batman: Year One” and Marvel’s “Ultimate” line comes the latest comic book icon to get the “prequel” treatment: Archie! That’s right, now you, the reader can travel back in time with Archie and his friends to their very first year in high school in this five-part epic storyline we’re calling THE FRESHMAN YEAR SAGA!

It all began last issue (ARCHIE COMICS #587) with a poignant prologue called “The Summer Before,” exploring how the famous friends who just graduated junior high would deal with their pending positions as high school seniors. Now, in issue #588’s “Freshman Year: Fall Semester,” Archie and his friends are starting the fall semester of their first high school year. Having survived a summer that saw the departure of Jughead and bickering parents, the gang arrives at high school… to find elementary school Principal Mr. Weatherbee has now become the high school Principal! But it’s not just about reunions at Riverdale High. Archie also makes a new friend in Pencilneck G., although he prefers his more laid-back buddy Jughead. He also makes some new enemies in Jared McGerk and his band of bullies! Along the way the other classic faculty members are introduced, as well as Pop Tate and his Chok’lit Shop! It’s the funniest first year of high school ever!

This special storyline is brought to you by none other than fan-favorite writer Batton Lash. No stranger to Archie Comics, the famed writer of the “Wolff & Byrd” series turned the comic industry upside down in 1994 when he penned the unlikely Archie/Marvel cross-over comic, “Archie Meets the Punisher.” Many thought it would never work, but Batton’s ingenious script won over even the toughest skeptics, and the comic wound up being not only one of Archie’s biggest-selling issues ever, but also one of the most highly-acclaimed. Batton returned the following year with another well-received story arc appearing across several Archie titles. The “House of Riverdale” was a loving tribute to the type of serio-comic, spooky mysteries so prevalent in the vintage “Life with Archie” series. Handling the art chores is “Scrapyard Detectives” creator and popular Archie artist/writer Bill Galvan. This is one “year” you can’t afford to miss!

CONTINUING THE FOLLOW-UP TO LAST YEAR’S MOST TALKED-ABOUT BETTY & VERONICA STORY, “BAD BOY TROUBLE” – FEATURING RIVERDALE’S FAMOUS TEENS IN A REALISTIC STYLE!

“The Match Makers Part 2”: Picking up where last issue left off, Archie, Betty, Reggie and Veronica carry out their plan to play “matchmaker” for Jughead and break him free of his “fifth wheel” status! The boys bring Jughead to the movies and the girls bring Sandy Sanchez in an elaborate scheme to have them “accidentally” run into one another! When Jughead and Sandy catch on to the scheme, they decide to turn the tables and pretend to be in love… or are they?! It’s another intriguing chapter in this 4-part epic! Last year’s “Bad Boy Trouble” set the comics world on its ear as the teens were depicted in a realistic style. Comic book legends Joe Staton and Al Milgrom carry on that look, handling pencils and inks respectively, in what is sure to be one of the more intriguing Archie stories of the year!

They were good books, they were a combined effort between DC & Archie. The editor at DC left and when the comics were going from phase one to phase two the titles were canceled.

I think the upcoming "new look" is a great move for you guys, because you've managed to get people all over the industry talking about Archie once again. And that's the kind of PR money can't buy!

Let's hope they buy a copy too.

Remove[ Posted by theecto on Mar 24th, 2007 5:33 PM ]...

I actually bought my first Archie comic since I was a kid, based on the whole "new look" buzz getting me to thinking about Archie for the first time in forever. I also pre-ordered the Betty & Veronica Double Digest where the new look debuts.

It'll be interesting to see where things go from here.

Remove[ Posted by ArchieComics on Mar 25th, 2007 10:50 AM ]...

My retailer orders the comics but not the digests too, so I had to pre-order a copy. We also have Raj coming up, then there is Civil Chores, and a very special 65th Anniversary edition of Archie Double Digest.

[ Posted by MMMelody on Mar 20th, 2007 9:57 AM ]...

Oh yes! I'm looking forward to the new stories. I think I would be even more interested if the girls clothing wasn't so dated. A slightly more modern look in their wardrobe would be great. But maybe that is just me being girly about it.

Hard to say about the Sabrina comic. I guess it feels a little too preteen for me to get into becuase the style is so cute. But as for it's demographic, that's probably a great thing. I personally would go for something a little less "trying hard to be a manga" styled. But, I still think it is great that you guys are experimenting! And that with kids getting into manga younger and younger, that was a smart route to choose.

What do you think about the new look for Betty & Veronica? It's not so much the look but the longer story, 100+ pages we hope will attract older reader.

Hi Rik,
Thanks man, glad you like my work, I worked at Disney for 6 years in the parks, wanted to get something in the art dept. but in time I learned from friends and co-workers that it was very hard to get into and it wasn't the most secure job in the company.
I drew characters for co-workers from time to time and sometimes like in the case of the illustrations that you saw in my gallery for attraction decoration...
Will probably tryout for Disney comics sometime in the future when I have enough related material prepared...

Hi Rik,
Thanks for the add and invite, although personally I have to confess I have never been a huge fan of the "Archieverse" I have been a fan of some of the artists that have worked for the company's long history, like the late great Dan DeCarlo.
Archie is the Dick Clark of comics and has enjoyed and endured a long succesful run in the industry.
If you ever have the time please pay my site a visit at; www.surfaceartstudios.com look around let me know what you think.
I am currently working on some small independent titles but would love to someday work for a larger company.

What a surprise to see you here as well! Did you receive my t-shirt proposal for Tulsa Boys' Home. If so, is there a chance we might work together? Michael Vance

I sent in your t-shirt proposal but, I have not heard back from the office. In truth most everyone was out of the office from Christmas through New Years, so it takes a little while to chatch up.

YESSSSS! Archie comics and I have a lot of history together.... Archie is partly reponsible for my current obsession with comic books. That's where it stemmed from. Thanks a lot Archie! And I mean that with NO sarcasm :)
