In 2005 I realized one of my childhood dreams. I opened a comic book shop. It's been really successful...and just as I opened the store I met the girl of my dreams. We got married in November 2007, actually. Sadly, my father passed away earlier in 2007 but he's a big part of the store, as he painted the store sign, the interior, helped build signage and doors and was generally amazing. He's greatly missed, but one of his paintings hangs here in the store.

I've been working hard to help foster a scene of local artists and writers...and promote them as much as I can. I'm organizing "Drink & Draw" events around the area, have been getting Sketch Sessions going every month or so...and will soon embark on "publishing" local creators through our very own webcomics portal!

So, the next childhood dream to tackle...and something I've made little leaps and starts at over the years...the creation and publication of my own comic book, well, it's on the horizon. This whole last year and a half was great...but I hope to have a comic book or three in the can by my next birthday. Each year keeps flying by and I want to tell all the stories I can before...well...yeah. I've set up the back room as my personal studio, so the comic creation can begin in earnest! Evan Saathoff's "CUDDLEBLUD" and my own ideas are the core of my focus right now. I'm very excited about these projects!

I'm also really stoked to meet and interact with others in the industry...whether they be wet newbies like myself or jaded veterans.

Any creator interested in dropping by our shop...please check out our website: http://www.astrokittycomics.com

BTW...my name is Joel, what's yours?

Astrokitty Comics has put out two anthologies featuring stories by various local/regional artists! Larrytown Laffs! and Larryvillains United are both sold out but we'll be offering those online in the near future once we launch our upcoming web-comics site. That same site will feature regularly-updated strips by local/regional artists/creators as well as serve as the home for the Astrokitty & Friends web-comic. We're stoked about it and hope to have it see the light of day SOON!

More Astrokitty artwork and whatnot can be found at our respective facebook and myspace accounts:

On a personal note, you can find my (Joel's) artwork on my artblog:

There you can see the kind of stuff I do at conventions, drink & draw events, the commission work I do, and the comics I'm working on!

Thanks for the befriendment, I was at your shop a while back I'll have to pop in again next time I'm in Lawrence. I think it's cool you're helping local artists, how long do you think it will be before you get your imprint started up?

Dude, we'd have SOOO been there, but Cat just got out of the hospital from having a--can you believe it--KIDNEY removed, and Shan went into the hospital last night. (Details in my LJ.)

Just didn't want you to think we were blowing you off, man.

So hows the comic shop going? :)

I'm looking forward to the Drink & Draw. I don't drink (much) and I don't draw (much) but Mike Sullivan said I ought to come out anyway and Mike's never wrong. Word is that you've got a pretty well established bunch who'll be out there so I'm looking forward to lots of meeting and re-meeting people.

Wow, you are doing a great thing. It's nice to have the backing of somebody else when you are a creator, and making use of local talent is what we are trying to do ourselves. Best of luck with your owm stuff, just keep working and it'll happen! Merry X-Mas from all of us at the Lounge, London!

Thanks for the add, Joel. Went in the shop yesterday for a browse around, looks like you've got some good stuff! I'll have to save up a little Christmas money and bring a list with me. :)
