As tensions between world powers escalate to the inevitability of World War II, another war already rages: between the forces of white and black magic. As Nazi occultists race to unlock the secrets of the Hollow Earth and a lost race of super-mortals, can globetrotting aviatrix Athena Voltaire foil the Third Reich and their insidious plan to conquer the free world?

Athena Voltaire—by Steve Bryant (writer/artist), Chad Fidler (color artist), Jason Millet (color artist) and Molly McBride (editor) —is published by Ape Entertainment.

In 2002, Athena Voltaire launched online. AV ran on the web for a couple of years at various sites in the ModernTales.com family, and was honored with an Eisner Award nomination (Best Digital Comic, 2004) and by being included in St. Martin's "The Year's Best Graphic Novels, Comics & Manga" (2004 edition).

In early 2006, AV debuted in print at Speakeasy Comics. 30 days later, Speakeasy Comics folded up shop.

These two events are not—I repeat *NOT*— related.

Now, we're thrilled to make our home at Ape Entertainment! The Collected Webcomics and our initial print miniseries, Flight of the Falcon, for which Steve Bryant received a Russ Manning "Most Promising Newcomer" nomination at the 2007 Eisner Awards, are in stores now.

And Athena Voltaire returns in February, 2009, with the Black Coat Athena Voltaire One-Shot!

Two Pulp-tastic Heroes. Two Complete Stories. Two Centuries. Two Dollars! Find out what a Revolutionary-era Crusader and 1930's Aviatrix have in common, besides their status as two of Ape's most exciting heroes! An adventure spanning two centuries: from The Black Coat facing down a pirate attack to Athena Voltaire encountering the horrifying consequences of the treasure they sought. The two variant covers by Eisner-award nominee Steve Bryant combine to form a poster image! It's an action-packed crossover 150 years in the making!

The Black Coat/Athena Voltaire One-Shot is in Diamond Distributors' Previews catalog now. Preorder it today!

Here's all the ordering info your retailer needs to get copies of these books in your hands:

Athena Voltaire, volume 2: Flight of the Falcon is 120 pages and retails for $16.95 Order code MAY083588

AthenaVoltaire.com is back up and running, and you can read previews of The Collected Webcomics and Flight of the Falcon in our ComicSpace gallery.

You can also check out Steve's blog, read Chad's blog, and check out Jason's work.

And, for the latest up-to-the-minute news about our favorite globetrotting aviatrix (as well as sketches and deleted pages, rarities, etc), be sure to check out the official Athena Voltaire Blog!

In late 2009, Ape Comics will release Athena Voltaire and the Volcano Goddess, a 2-issue mini-series by Steve Bryant (writer/artist) and Jason Millet (colors).

“...Imagine if the likes of The Mummy and Van Helsing were actually, you know, good.”
Warren Ellis
writer/co-creator of Planetary, The Authority, Transmetropolitan and more

"Athena Voltaire is just my kind of glorious pulp epic. A comic lover's comic book if there ever was one, full of everything that makes comic books worth loving."
— Matt Fraction
writer/co-creator Casanova, Five Fists of Science

"A glance at Athena Voltaire could simply paint her as a female Indiana Jones but that shortchanges the atmospheric details that Steve Bryant and company have captured on the page. You don't just read this story, you practically fall into the panels and have the adventure with her."
- Tad Stones
Producer, Hellboy Animated

“…the next best thing to finding a trove of long-lost adventures from the 1930s.”
– Javiar Grillo-Marxuach
Writer/producer, Lost, Co-Creator, The Middleman

"A terrific pulp adventure story with great pacing, interesting plot twists and solid dialogue combined with simply beautiful artwork equals something we would sell armloads and armloads of. ..I would like a trade paperback of Athena Voltaire to sell in my store, please. The sooner the better."
— James Sime
owner, Isotope: The Comic Book Lounge

"Athena Voltaire is a wonderful pulp throwback. A return to the heady days of the adventure comic. Swords, guns, airplanes, sand, jungles, dens of villainy, conspirators, cutthroats, treasure, and all 36"- 24"- 36" of the most dangerous woman in the genre."
—Tim Bradstreet
cover artist of The Punisher, Hellblazer

"Manly story tellin', beautiful art and and enough butt kickin' to keep a boot factory in business for life. Athena Voltaire is your ticket to clobberin' evil."
— Beau Smith
writer of Guy Gardner: Warrior, Wyonna Earp, Cobb: Off the Leash

"Steve Bryant and company resurrect the classic era of high adventure in Athena Voltaire. With stylish storytelling and gorgeous rendering, they make a genre that has in recent years been relegated to the back shelves of entertainment fun and compelling again. I can't wait to see what they and Athena have in store for us."
— Mark Schultz
creator of Xenozoic Tales, writer of Superman, Man of Steel and Prince Valiant, illustrator of Conan of Cimmeria.

"Is it sick for a man to love a comic strip character? Too damn bad, because I'm already in love with Athena Voltaire! If loving Athena is wrong, I don't want to be right!"
—Mike W. Barr
co-creator/writer of The Maze Agency, Camelot 3000, The Outsiders, writer of Batman, Detective Comics.

"Athena Voltaire packs its pages with beautifully depicted and well told tales of adventure and historical hijinks. It's a perfect blend of pulp excitement and modern storytelling. I can't get enough.”
Bryan Deemer
host, Comic Geek Speak

"Athena Voltaire is an amazing adventure series. It captures the feel of vintage 1930's Republic serial film cliffhangers, with a stylized look and action budget they could only dream about."
—John Siuntres
Host, Word Balloon

"Athena Voltaire mixes the best parts of classic matinee with modern storytelling. Athena Voltaire is a guilty pleasure that you should never feel guilty about reading."
Christopher Neseman
Host, Around Comics

Hi there! We’re starting up this year’s Small Press Idol…and wanted to invite you to the grand unveiling of this year’s Guidelines. I apologize for the all-in-one nature of this. At this time, individuals and teams have a little over a month to get things together and be ready to post their Round 1 entries. Round 1 will last till March 25th. It’s a solid window to get a project together and qualified for Round 2 past our judge panel. If you are interested in being a contestant, this is fair warning to get a project going!
If you are a news outlet or resource of any sort, we invite you to help spread the word about Small Press Idol, and get on the official Sponsors and Supporters list on the Idol Main Page. Traditionally, the page has gotten hundreds of thousands of hits a month for the 5 months the contest runs. All we ask in return for the link placement on our prominently placed list, is a link back in some way that is fairly prominent, and that you indeed cover the contest if you are a news site. You can contact us about that right from the guidelines page.
Just want to watch the show? That’s great! Now is time to sign up at the site so you can VOTE in the rounds to come, and post comments about your favorites! We’re expecting hundreds of contestants this year. It should be a lot of fun!

/Idol07/index.html

Hope this message reaches you in the spirit it was intended, you are welcome to ask questions, and otherwise make sure this is for real. This is the fourth year for the SPI. Last year’s contest pages are still online. So that’s what this is about, hope it interests you!

Thanks, Mainframe!

A clarification, though...we're an Eisner Award nominee, not a winner. The excellent autobiographical story "Mom's Cancer" deservedly took home the award.

But thanks a million for your support!

You guys were robbed!!! Actually I heard that was a good story (but I haven't read it).

At least "Owly" won (my little girl and school teacher wife like that one). But hey, there's always next year for you guys to bring home the gold!

Thanks for the ADD proof that not all webcomics are created equal. Amazing story. Amazing art. I am a big fan.

[ Posted by Mainframe on Dec 18th, 2006 7:02 PM ]...

Thanks for adding me to the list. Immediately after this comic was first featured on Comic Geek Speak, I put it on my pull list - then SpeakEasy went under(sigh). But thanks to Ape Entertainment, I have my copy every time it comes out. Eisner Award winning goodness!!!

Anyone on the fence should go to the website and see what you're missing for yourself. Definitely a "Mainframe" recommended read!!

Hi,

yours is one of those things I've wanted to check for a while, but the comic always seemed to slip under my radar. I'll be sure to follow the link to the first issue (I tried via a banner at comicbookdb, but that was dead) and I'll get back to you!
Much obliged for the add!
