I'm a writer. I wrote the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's The Hedge Knight. I also wrote The Oz/Wonderland Chronicles and worked on The Imaginaries and Lullaby. Currently, I'm working on the sequel to The Hedge Knight (which will be published by Marvel), my series TimeFlyz (an all ages series for Zondervan), the Old Testament adaptation Kingdoms (also for Zondervan), and the fantasy series ArmorQuest. I just finished the final script for The Oz/Wonderland Chronicles and will begin work on a prequel soon. I have some other odd projects, independent type stuff, small press, and self publishing because I love the freedom to experiment you get on those types of projects. And I love swamp monsters. ~ Ben Feed My Starving Children -- An organization that provides nutritious food packets to starving people around the world. I'm writing some two page flyers for them to generate awareness and solicit volunteers for their efforts. Community Comics -- I co-founded this studio, which does work for various publishers. Marvel Comics -- Publisher of The Hedge Knight and it's sequel, the upcoming Sworn Sword, which I have just started. Dabel Brothers -- Studio producing Hedge Knight and Sworn Sword. Abacus Comics -- Current home of Lullaby and The Imaginaries (formerly from Alias Enterprises). Alias Enterprises -- Studio for Kingdoms, which is being published by Zondervan. Zondervan -- Home to my series TimeFlyz and publisher of Kingdoms, which I am writing for Alias. BuyMeToys.com -- Publisher of The Oz/Wonderland Chronicles. (And also a pretty good comic shop!) The Megazeen -- A zine I've done some work with -- they've published a couple of my short stories and we developed a couple challenges together. I've had some of the most fun working on projects for them. Graphic Classics -- I adapted an H.P. Lovecraft novella for this series. It's due to come out in 2008. (Note: The new Lovecraft edition currently for sale on their website does not have the story I worked on. Mine appears in a different upcoming anthology.) Graphic classics is an incredible series that presents/introduces some great works of literature in interesting and thought provoking ways. About Comics -- During 24 Hour Comic Day in 2005, I made a 24 hour comic. Apparently, someone at About Comics (the sponsor of the event) thought my scribbles made for a nice story and put my tale of the old west in the 24 Hour Comics Day Highlights 2005 book. A little while later, I took part in a team comic creation called Comics Jam War. This time, the art was much better, and the three judges awarded my partner and me the gold medal. Fun fun fun! Ben Avery's Amazon profile Ben Avery Online -- My really lame website. Seriously. Do NOT go there. It's terrible. I'll let you know when it's OK to look. Winner of the 2006 Comics Jam War. Comics Jam War, its logo, and the Comics Jam War medal are trademarks of About Comics.

The Girl Can Fly
Stick figure fantasy/fairy tale about a girl who can fly, written and drawn by Ben Avery . . . and proving that he should stick to writing. It's a fun story, though, and was the first graphic novel he ever wrote . . .

Gideon's Army: The Quick and the Undead
In the mythic Old West, he's on a mission from God to cleanse the land of a deadly plague . . . of vampires. This stand alone story was introduce the character and world and be the first part of a larger story. Art by Joe Spicer.

The Ballad of the Freak
What happens when a writer pretends to be an artist? This happens. This story was selected to be in the 2006 24 Hour Comic Book Day Highlights book because, as I was told, "You aren't the best artist, but you told a story."

Feed My Starving Children
A comic brochure I wrote to get people interested in the work of FMSC. Check out their website. One of the most worthy causes in the world, and an upfront, upstanding organization to boot. Art: Sherwin Schwartzrock

Psalm 40
From Selah! The Psalms Project. The challenge: illustrate a Psalm. When I drew this, I literally was in the middle of page three . . . and looking forward to the hope of something better. And so I was able to draw the following pages as well.

The White Tower
A while ago, I thought a 24 Hour Comic Book was too much, so I suggested the 7 Day Creation Challenge. 7 days. 16 pages. A group of people on a message board I frequented took the month of October and we did the challenge. This was my entry.

The Servant
An Easter story from a different perspective, told by one of the people who was involved in the arrest of Jesus, that leads to a rather morbid punchline. But I couldn't resist. Artwork by Darren Brady. Originally published in Chosen Mortals #0.
|
 |
Childe Rowland to the Dark Tower Came
Based loosely on Robert Browning's poem of the same name, this is a classic fantasy story of knights and heroism with a twist. With artwork by Mike Murphy, the story is circular, like a celtic knot . . .
|
 |
The Little Debtor
A silent film on the page. Tim Baron, the artist, is one of the best comic artists not actually doing comics. Read the story once to experience it. Then read it again and just stare at those drawings . . .

Death Wish on Asteroid 14532
A sci-fi EC comics tribute created for The Megazeen.
Art by Mark Melton.

Thanks. Lullaby is one of those strange, stars aligning in the right place at the right time kind of things . . . I'm always so happy to hear people like it. Hector's pretty amazing. |

Hey Ben! I love your stuff! I just happened to pick up an issue of ArmorQuest the other day, and then subsequently happened to run into you here at ComicSpace. The comics industry seems like a hard profession for Christians to plug into, and I'm just totally jazzed about what you're doing! Keep up the awesome work. Hey Ben I was in a Christian bookstore today and saw a promo comic that you're doing a bunch of writing for for Zondervan. that is very cool. Congratulations on that.
I was psyched to see that Jim Krueger is doing work for that too. 1 Reply [ Latest posted on February 17th, 2007 2:08 PM ]

Shucks! I don't think MTS is the best, but it sure means a lot coming from a famous "Marvel-Image-Zondervon" guy! :) |

That's cool. It would be smart for Newsarama to do a story on it. |
