Yeah, I'm a comic nerd, but a comic nerd with a law degree!
Click here to send email bhr3s@yahoo.com "Who am I? Why am I here?" -Admiral Stockdale Liz Lemon: "Why are you wearing a tuxedo?" Jack Donaghy: "It's after 6. What am I, a farmer?" "Here comes the future, and you can't run from it,/if you've got a blacklist, I wanna be on it!" -Billy Bragg --- January 10, 2007 Save the date! (Maybe . . . ) My lovely fiance Shannon and I have tentative plans to tie the knot on St. Patrick's Day at the Emory & Henry College Alumni House. Not sure how many people I will be allowed to invite, but in any event, it wwill be on the small side. I am awaiting my orders. More to come. -Bruce PS Shannon thinks it is *hilarious* that I tell people we set the date so soon because "she won't be 'showing' much" by then." ;) --- December 16, 2006 A big stack o' funny-books Stopped by my friend Robert's store in Bristol yesterday. Mountain Empire Comics, MY comic-shop for over twenty years now, and a fine operation to be sure. It had been some several weeks since my last trip over, and my pull-list stack was . . . breathtaking. My 'special lady friend' is away this weekend, so I've immersed myself in the world of comic-book fun today! Yay! And tonight, to really kick the nerd-dial up to 11, my buddy Sean is coming over to battle Mephisto! An Ultimate Alliance, indeed. --- December 14, 2006 THE COLD, BITTER STING OF REJECTION So I've just discovered that my friend request to Dave Gibbons (of Watchmen fame) was DENIED. Hey, if you're going to get the ol' "Heisman stiff-arm," it might as well be from the best! *Sniff* I just wanted to be his friend. *Sniff* Maybe he just has something against lawyers? Hard to believe, I know, given the high esteem in which the profession and its practitioners are generally held . . . --- December 13, 2006 I picked up a few things off the racks today at G2K Games in Richlands, VA, apart from my usual pull at Bristol VA/TN's Mountain Empire Comics. 52 # . . . whatever, the one with Ralph Dibny being chased by the Yeti (Yeti, BTW, literally means "look at that thing over there"). For my money, the best, most . . . lyrical issue yet of that beautiful (sometimes less so) mess. I think the last few months of this are going to be LOADED with payoff. Justice League of America #4- What a thrill-ride. Meltzer packs this thing with wall-to-wall IDEAS. I don't mean it is punched-up with commentary on man's inhumanity to man or anything of the like, but cool riff after cool riff. And the ending . . . not sure where that came from, but an unexpected twist, and one that I look forward to seeing developed next issue. I almost sprung for the Vixen alternate cover, but I occasionally have more good sense than money. Occasionally. Spider-Man:Reign #1- No, Just no. Ugh. And let's not even go into the appearance of Peter's shrivelled old-guy frank and beans. Argh. Wolverine #49- Bought on a lark, due to the cover featuring Wolvy dresed as St. Nick. A flip through the interior looks good. We'll see. Cross your fingers, team. Nothing like a little old-school superhero action. More stuff I'm looking forward to this week: Escapists #6; DCU Infinite Christmas; SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE SLEEP OF REASON #1; TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED #3 (digging the I, Vampire + Dr. Thirteen backup, not so much the Spectre lead); and ULTIMATE X-MEN #77. Kind of a lean week. Stuff that I'm looking forward to for next week: CONAN #35; 52 WEEK #33; AQUAMAN SWORD OF ATLANTIS ONCE AND FUTURE TP; FABLES #56; FABLES VOL 8 WOLVES TP; AVENGERS EARTHS MIGHTIEST HEROES II #4; NEW AVENGERS #26; NEW AVENGERS ILLUMINATI #1; ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #103; BATTLESTAR GALACTICA ZAREK #1; and LONE RANGER #3. --- Good stuff: -Eric Shanower's Age of Bronze -Dark Horse's Book(s) of Monsters/Ghosts/Witches/I'm Leaving One Out -Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai -Blue Monday by Chynna Clugston -Courtney Crumrin & The Night Things -Northwest Passage -Planetes -Walking Dead, the -The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen "Where's my Black Dossier?
