After graduating with a BFA at Umass: Dartmouth (then SMU) in 1990, I entered the world of comics two years later debuting at Marvel Comics as an inker on WARLOCK & THE INFINITY WATCH with Jim Starlin & Angel Medina for over two years. I produced ten years of consecutive work there on such titles as SILVER SURFER, NOVA, COSMIC POWERS, STARMASTERS, ULTRA-GIRL, STAR TREK: DS9, HEROES (911 charity book), the Marvel-owned Malibu Comics like FOXFIRE and SIREN, and the critically-acclaimed, three-year run on BLACK PANTHER with Priest & Sal Velluto for which I won an Ooks award and 2 Squiddies awards for 'best inker'. Over the years I've also contributed to other publishers such as Acclaim Comics (BLOODSHOT), Penny-Farthing Press (DECOY, CAPTAIN GRAVITY & THE POWER OF THE VRIL), Wildstorm (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), Harris Comics (VAMPIRELLA: REVELATIONS), DC ( JSA, AQUAMAN, BATMAN CHRONICLES, JLA 80-PAGE GIANT), and lately for Valiant Entertainment (HARBINGER: THE BEGINNING), and on the new A First Salvo line-up (DANGER'S DOZEN, SAGA SIX). After a 5 year break I recently returned to Marvel in 2007 to ink the ANNIHILATION: CONQUEST-QUASAR series with Christos Gage & Mike Lilly. Since then I have worked with Sal on the new story in Valiant's ARCHER & ARMSTRONG: FIRST IMPRESSIONS HC and some uncredited work for Sweden's Egmont Publishing of THE PHANTOM: STONES OF BLOOD, also with Sal. In addition, I've inked Gordon Purcell on STAR TREK YEAR FOUR: THE ENTERPRISE EXPERIMENT and I recently completed the 5-issue series START TREK: THE LAST GENERATION, both for IDW. I also write a column for SKETCH magazine, "Inkblots", and in 2008 founded The Inkwell Awards to show appreciation and recognition to the artists and craft of comic book inking. Thanks so very much, Mike!
I'm wrapping up the last issue of Star Trek: The Last Generation in a couple of weeks. Then I only have to do a Sketch column, 7 months of tax receipts and prepping my taxbook, Inkwell Awards stuff to kick off 2009, website updates, 20 commissions, and yes, packing for NYCC! I'll see you there! I'll be the zoned-out, bewildered one;-)

I really enjoyed your column on inking, especially those great tips! I wouldn't have thought about half of those on my own. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks a bunch, Javier! I don't often hear from subscribers of SKETCH in regards to my "Inkblots" column and I'm fairly new at the whole columnist thing so I sometimes wonder how boring or idiotic I sound...always great to hear that some of you dig the shop talk. I try to juggle shop talk with my career experiences, with some history, and some visual stuff (something I've been asked to try to focus on). I have several columns that have been written up in advance to cover the whole year, especially now with the Inkwell Awards topic and subsequent results a couple of issues later. I try to be eclectic...please LMK what you think!

From my post at Newsarama re: the passing of color artist Steph Peru: http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=146444 Christ. I was still reeling from the passing of Steve Gerber last night and I wake up to this tragic news. I didn't know Steph well and only had limited email correspondence with him but he was truly kind and gracious. But I'm proud to say I collaborated with him during his all-too short career and for anyone who may've picked up the recent ANNIHILATION: CONQUEST VOL. 1 hc collection I think I can easily say that he did incredible, brilliant color work over what Mike Lilly and I rendered for the QUASAR series. We are certainly fortunate for our brief affiliation but I am sincerely crushed at witnessing this promising talent taken away so soon.

Sad news, to hear of someone passing away so young. Very talented as well. |

Hi Beddy/Bob,
Thanks for the past support to help the PCC charity. I'll soon have another donation of art for them to post at their site and to later auction this year.
