It will go without saying if you have read more than one CASEY AND SCOTTY strip that I enjoyed my childhood so much that I refuse to end it, ever.
The origins of CASEY AND SCOTTY are no big secret. I credit my best friend Micheal, who used to take spaceship drawings me and my other friends had made in 7th grade study hall, and do this 'John Madden' playbook story telling thing where he'd draw lines and tell what each persons ship was doing before it finally exploded. It's hard to explain unless you were there, but it was hysterical. The main thing that remains is that Micheal, who was and still is rotund, always had a blimp shaped ship. This, with a little help from the Millenium Falcon, became the USS Quisenberry. CASEY AND SCOTTY , as a comic, though, started out as an idea that I had back in high school. The idea was, I'd draw a comic, and make a lot of money. Well, I've been in banking for the better part of two decades, so what actually happened is, I WORK around a lot of money (but I don't get to touch it), and I draw a comic strip in my spare time. 'Time Out For School', my first serial comic, was good enough to snag a couple of International League Press Conference awards in the late 80's. But, along came the lovely Jennifer and my co-hort in crime, Casey, and I took a 15 year break to gather my thoughts about the kind of comic strip I'd draw if I was just drawing it for me (and to Coach Tee-Ball, hang out with my family, and do some community theatre, where I picked up the nickname MOOSE). But the urge to do a comic strip eventually became too much for me to ignore, so, in late 2003, I started working on 'Shaggy and Moose', but also decided it would be a good idea to try to sever two fingers on my drawing hand in a horrible car wash accident (I'm totally serious, I wish I wasn't). So, a year later, after I had recovered, I came up with the idea that Casey (who was a character in 'Shaggy and Moose'), should be the focus of the strip, and that he should have a dog, and a Spaceship named after my favorite baseball player. After a few months of doing the pencilling while Casey did the ink work, I realized that there was enough nerve damage in my fingers that I could not draw the way I used to. Since I pretty much lived in PowerPoint in my job anyway, I soon discovered a cool way to draw with the mouse that allowed me to make corrections when my hand was not as steady as I'd like. Instead of trying to go offline and make the necessary tweaks to get CASEY AND SCOTTY to where it is today, and then publish a perfect comic strip, I've pretty much brought our readers along for the ride, as they are the best source for what is cool, and what stinks. Example: lots of us think 'mooning' is terribly funny. Doesn't hurt anyone, and anybody of any age, religion, background, or ethnicity can moon, or be mooned, and nobody gets hurt. So, I wrote it in the strip as the ultimate limit that I'd ever go to as far as potty humor goes. However, when my 5 year old nephew told his Kindergarten teacher that it was okay to show your butt to people because his Uncle Moose said so in his comic, I got a nice phone call from his mom, and she was none too happy. So, okay, now I know I have 5 year olds reading the strip. Lesson learned. Hope you enjoy the strip! Moose |
