CCBCAA
The Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards Association was formed in 2004 as a means to honour Canadian creators, publishers and retailers in the medium of comic books. With permission of the estate of Joe Shuster, the Canadian-born co-creator of Superman the creator & publisher awards are named the Joe Shuster Canadian Comic Book Creators Awards. The Joe Shuster Awards honour excellence in Canadian comic book writing, art, cartooning, publishing and more. There is also a Hall of Fame that honours veteran creators. An additional award, the Outstanding Canadian retailer award is named after Harry Kremer the late owner of Now & Then Books in Kitchener, Ontario. The CCBCAA currently consists of an administrative committee, a nominating committee for current comic books and graphic novels, a nominating committee for the Hall of Fame, and a special judging committee for the retailer award. The admistrative committee currently consists of James Waley, Kevin A. Boyd, Peter Fisico, Jonathan Kuehlein, and Robert Haines. Advisors to the Administrative Committee include broadcaster and columnist Rob Salem, personality Rick Green, producer Mark Askwith and creators Ty Templeton and Dave Sim, among others. The CCBCAA is a not-for-profit organization. Funds for the Joe Shuster Awards are raised by the CCBCAA from donations, sponsorship and eBay auctions of prints and other specialty items. Past Sponsors have included The Toronto Star, Lionshead Resort, Quebecor World, LeBonFon Printing, Fisico Massage Therapy, Paradise Conventions, Silver Snail and Comics Guaranty, LLC (CGC). The Doug Wright Awards are another award that was created in 2004 that honours Canadian Cartooning, but the CCBCAA is not involved in that award other than in an auxiliary advisory capacity. joeshusterawards@yahoo.cahttp://www.joeshusterawards.com

I was at the Shuster award ceremony last year, and had a good time. I'm glad we have something like this, but personally, I think there should be a category for webcomics as well. 1 Reply [ Latest posted on January 8th, 2007 8:54 AM ]

There will definitely be an Outstanding Canadian WebComics Creator category, the question that will be decided shortly is whether or not it will be added this year or in 2008. WebComics are, in many ways, a lot like self-published, non-distributed comics in that there are so many it is virtually impossible to identify them all and who is Canadian. If we launch it this year it will be a referred award - wherein a group of industry people have sent in their lists of what they feel are the best. The subsequent year for webcomics put online in 2007 we will likely be asking people to refer their links to the Joe Shuster Awards for consideration and judging - the same plan we will be putting forth for self-published, non distributed comics - that's another category that will definitely be added in 2008. |
