I'm a 34 year old graphic artist who lives in Arkansas and has loved comics as long as I can remember.

I'm an illustrator who'd like to find more time to work on comics-related artwork and possibly animation.

Since I live in a rural state I'm starving for social contact with other artists and lovers of the field(s).

Yes. I'm desperate. :)

Eventually I hope to use this space to host a portfolio and eventual illustration work and have some fun.

Hello again. I thought I'd answer your questions in comment.

"1.Are you a working pro?"

Not really. I've tried to take one projects, but my real income requirements are such that I cannot keep to a long-term art commitment. You can't really start out as if you were a big time pro, becuase their income is based upon popularity and amount of purchase. I'm not able to work for under minimum wage (which, in man hours, is expected if you're just starting out in comics)

"2.If not, how do you balance the "day job" with family and the "dream job"?"

It's a little easier when your spouse has had cancer and has removed the possibility of children. Still, as a breadwinner, I'm not able to dedicate all of my free time to the comic. It's mostly a relief valve for me.

"I've been a graphic artist for almost 15 years and am doing fairly well but always wanted to concentrate on illustrating and comics or animation my whole life."

If you're familiar with doing things digitally, you might want to give MOHO or Flash a try. MOHO is great for skeletal-based animation, and a little easier than Flash, plus the output quality is great.

"I haven't given up on it but find it harder and harder to keep some energy for my personal work outside of my "boss's work"."

My income niche is pretty centered on Drafting and Architectural design, and I've found it's hard to break away from it, especially now when the "ornamental" trades seem to be losing relevence. With my art, I'm beginning to become really comfortable with the "free speech" associated with having no boss or vying for readers' money.

I'll be the first. Thanks for the add. I look forward to seeing some of your work!
