ChrisBeckett
I write. it's what I do, and it's what I was meant to do. No, I'm not getting paid for it yet, but I'm working at it. Nearly three years ago, my buddy and I finally decided to stop talking and start doing.
To that end, we have self-published two issues of our b/w comics/prose anthology WARRIOR27, and although the initial issue did poorly - and was, in retrospect, quite weak - our second one was well-received at the amazing Small Press Expo in Bethesda, Maryland and even garnered a very favorable review at Indy Comic Review. We also have a myspace account for our self-publishing venture, On The Fly Publications. Go ahead, check it out. We keep a sporadic blog that updates people on where you can find our work next, and I have been uploading my short prose fiction there, which I have been writing based upon the images found at the Elephant Words site. If you like short bursts of entertaining fiction, you should check it out. I have also had two stories accepted at the burst culture site 50 Years From Now, which is a shared world site dealing with speculative fiction of 1000 words or less detailing what life might be like 50 years from now. It's a pretty cool idea with some great pieces. My first one was a horror piece entitled I Gotta Get Outta Here. It has been described as "icky" by my wife and "f***ed up" by the site's moderator. My second submission is the initial chapter of a serial that will take the main character from the wilds of Maine, or what remains of the wilds, through to the dregs of New York City. It's entitled In Search Of, and I'm pretty excited to move forward with it. I've got some really great ideas I am anxious to relate. And, lest this all be about fiction, I also contribute a weekly column to the Pulse, which spotlights independent, self-published, and web comics. It is a review/recommendation column, weighing heavily toward the recommendation side of the pendulum, and I also include a short interview with the creator(s) as a DVD extra. Thus far, I've had the good fortune to interview Garth Ennis, Warren Ellis, Mike Baron, and Gilbert Hernandez, along with some up-and-comers like G.B Tran, Kevin Mellon, and James Hindle. It's been fun, I've managed to make some contacts, and - most importantly - it has kept me writing. And that's the only way I can hope to achieve my dream of one day being published.
