Free Lunch Comics Acquires New Talent

Granby, CT: On the heels of their 10th anniversary, the owners of Free Lunch Comics (www.freelunchcomics.com) have embarked on an adventure they least expected. On August 7th of this year, Matt Ryan, Steve Kanaras and Steve Kuster opened their independent comic book label to include titles from other independent creators. Through bulletins posted on ComicSpace.com and their own website, Free Lunch solicited submissions for creator-owned material. And, on September 16th, they extended the first contract to Everett Soares for his title, Sky Pirates.

Soares, creator and writer of Sky Pirates, is a recent finalist in Small Press Idol. As a finalist, Soares published the action-packed story as an Issue #0. His success in the competition attracted the attention of Free Lunch, prompting them to make the decision to accept creator-owned submissions. Free Lunch has contracted Soares to a 5-book limited series, with the release of Issue #1 to be announced soon. When asked for his thoughts on his future with Free Lunch, Soares proclaims “I feel this is a wonderful opportunity to produce a quality product with a great up-and-coming company.”

In addition to his newly formed association with Free Lunch, Soares has also formed Jolly Rogue Studios, which will serve as the official studio producing Sky Pirates #1-5. Staff of Jolly Rogue Studios includes:

· Brian Brinlee as Lead Artist
· Michael W. Kellar as Lead Inker
· Jet Amago as Lead Colorist
· Cary Kelley as Lead Letterer
· Susan Soares as Promotions & Communications Coordinator

On their decision to include Sky Pirates in their growing company, Ryan stated "Ever since I met Everett and Susan, I knew that they had a vision. I was able to see this idea grow from its initial concept at a convention in Springfield, Mass. and our paths would continue to cross at other cons. From script to page to joining the Comic Artists Guild then entering Small Press Idol...it would make perfect sense for them to join our family. They are driven, creative and dedicated. It just seemed right." Adding his thoughts, Kanaras said "Having the opportunity to publish a book as unique, and within a fully-realized world as Sky Pirates is both exciting and an honor. This book will redefine fantasy in comics."

Under the direction of Ryan (www.comicspace.com/mattsminestudio/) as President, Kanaras (www.comicspace.com/castlereagh/) as Publisher and Kuster (www.comicspace.com/steveink/) as Creative Director, Free Lunch Comics has been publishing since 1997. Their flagship title, Bigger, has garnered critical and popular acclaim in the comics community. They have recently expanded their line of creator-owned titles, including a comedy entitled Pork and Beans, a horror anthology called Only in Whispers, a science fiction serial Beyond the Kuyper Belt, and of course Sky Pirates! Several other projects are in negotiations. Free Lunch Comics has expanded in order to diversify their offerings and provide entertaining books for readers of all interests.
