Kansas City Sketchbook Party Date: Sunday, February 18, 2007 Time: 3:00 PM (leave when you're out of paper!) Place: FRIC & FRAC, 1700 W. 39th Street, Kansas City, MO Welcome to the Comic Creators Network 2007! The Comic Creators Network began in April of 2002, with a handful of artists and writers holding their first meeting in a local coffee shop in Kansas City, Missouri... Over its first few years the CCN grew and transformed, until it was an organization with over 110 due-paying members, with 4 to 5 scheduled events per month, a board-of-directors, publishing 300 page anthologies, printing up t-shirts, organizing comic-art shows, and traveling around the country to comic book conventions. It was crazy! But it showed just how vibrant the Kansas City comic book scene can be...and the breadth and depth of the talent living in Kansas City. The CCN later entered a loose experimental phase, got rid of dues and the board-of-directors, attempted two you-pay-you-play anthologies, and slowly shrunk in both size and activity. The group became centered around the CCN Message Board. But in 2007, the group is transforming again. It's time to stoke the fires and bring back some of things that made the CCN great. There will be no dues. No t-shirts. No board-of-directors. None of the painful corporate stuff. So what am I talking about, then? 1. An active vibrant message board, focusing on the local comix scene. A place where artists and writers can get feedback and constructive criticism about their artwork and scripts.
2. Weekly articles on the message board such as comicbook reviews, comicbook industry news, information about comicbook movies, and news and updates about the local comic book scene.
3. A monthly Sketchbook Party at a pub, coffee shop, or restaurant. Bring your sketchbook, or spend your time working on your latest project. Drink a pint of beer or a caffine-enriched-sugar-filled drink, and get some drawing done in the company of other artists (and writers too). Our next one will be February 18th!
4. A monthly Storyteller's Workshop for writers and artists. Discuss the elements of storytelling, and receive feedback on your latest projects.
5. Our goals this year are to draw more. Draw better. And to inspire each other to reach our personal goals, whatever they might be. That's it for now. That's the Comic Creators Network going into 2007, and it seems about right to me. So, if you like the idea of meeting, collaborating, and sharing with other comicbook artists and writers in the Kansas City area...then post on the CCN Message Board and we'll see you at one of our events in February! Mark Stinson - voidpulp@yahoo.comAnd while you're at it, would you like to read some free comix? Or perhaps our daily blog?

Hi there,
I thought that your group may be interested in becoming an affiliate of the International Cartoonist Conspiracy. We're a loose international organization of cartoonists. We include both professional cartoonists and amateur doodlers among our membership... membership is open to all cartoonists regardless of gender, race, age, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, attractiveness, wit, or talent. Only the desire to produce comics is necessary.
We've been conspiring since December 2002, and currently have active cartoonist cells in Minneapolis MN, San Francisco CA, Calgary/Edmonton, Chicago IL, Lancaster PA, Milwaukee WI, Montreal, Rice MN, Sacramento CA, Sioux Falls SD and Springfield IL. The most active cells meet once or twice a month to draw jam comics or participate in other activities, put out publications, and arrange gallery shows and other events.
What are the benefits in becoming a cell of the conspiracy?
1) Promotion. We'll give you a section of our message board, which can include a permanent link to whatever website you have for your group at the top of it. This is a good place to organize events and activities for your cell. We can also give a member of your group the ability to publish whatever your group wants on our group blog, which is the homepage of the site.
2) An international group of collaborators. Anyone can start an account on our message board to discuss and organize whatever they wish.

Let me know if you have any questions. If this appeals to your group and I'll set up your section of the message board and a blog account for whoever you wish to have one. Regardless, best of luck to you and your group.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the add. I looked over your site and it looks like you've got a great club out there in Kansas City. I'm a comic creator from California (www.ElephantEater.com) but will be coming through Kansas City for an in-store signing this coming summer.
June 13th, 2007 I'll be at B-Bop (5336 W. 95th St., Overland Park, KS 66207) from Noon-2pm and then their other store (3940 Main, Kansas City, MO 64111) that same day from 3-7pm.
Maybe I'll see you out there. Best of luck with your work and the club.
Sincerely,
Ryan Claytor Elephant Eater Comics www.ElephantEater.com 3 Replies [ Latest posted on January 3rd, 2007 9:24 AM ]

Take care,

And I think over the next two or three months, its only going to get better. And after all...you are in the KC area, so comixboard.com is your message board too!
I went over and checked out your blog. I'll stop in regularly and check out your reviews. I'd love it if you syndicated some of your blog reviews over at our message board. You would probably pull some traffic your way.

Hey Kansas City! Glad y'all found us out in New Mexico.
Sounds like you've got a great thing happening out there, similar to what we're doing with 7000 BC. Have you ever taken the workshops into schools, colleges, that sort of thing?
We've been very active with that, and it's been a great experience. 2 Replies [ Latest posted on December 30th, 2006 1:02 PM ]

Some of our members do workshops at schools, but its never been a function of our organization. But we've never been not-for-profit...or had to maintain those efforts. We've had anthologies (one was 300 pages and had a print-run of 500 copies), many 24-Hour-Comic events, and hundreds of monthly events over the years.
I think we're planning a 24-Hour-Comic event for June of 2007...but its not set in stone yet! Have you guys done a 24-Hour-Comic event?

[ Posted by belmondo on Dec 30th, 2006 1:02 PM ]...
Hi Mark,
Most of us have done the three official 24-Hour Comic Days, and 7000 BC co-hosted this year with True Believers' Comics and Gallery in Santa Fe. Which incidentally is a great shop, if you're ever in Santa Fe. Some of us have done other 24-hour comics on our own, or created comics with other restrictions, and we've done some jams along the same line. Recently we did an autobigraphical comic jam session where we wrote a script, threw names into a hat, and you drew whoever's you pulled out. Great fun, and it was a good warm up and collection of examples for the 6th graders we taught the following week, who did the same thing.
7000 BC had been around for a little while before the 2004 24-Hour Day, but that event brought a lot more of our core group together. The meeting following that event was the first I was at, as well as several others. I'd attempted a 24 hour comic a few year's before when I didn't know it was something that other people did, just to see what I could do. Got a lot done, but it was way too complex artwork for that. It took me two more years to finish it. It's called forever all, there's a link to it on my page. Pingue is the only 24-hour comic available on my website right now, but I'll have more there in the near future. There's a variety of 24 hour comics from me and others available on the 7000 BC site.

KC represent! Us folks in Atlanta need to get a comic group together.
Any good indy-friendly comic conventions near you? 1 Reply [ Latest posted on December 30th, 2006 12:56 PM ]

[ Posted by ComicCreatorsNetwork on Dec 30th, 2006 12:56 PM ]...
We had our own conventions in 2003 and 2004, but for now they have faded away. The show was called Sequence. 2003 was very art-gallery oriented. While 2004 was very small press publishing oriented. Niether show was as large or as focused as SPACE. I love that show...over in Columbus, Ohio. If you go to one small press show a year...SPACE would be it. Another good one, from all reports is STAPLE, down in Texas.
If Atlanta needs a group, you should start it. Name it. Start a small website. Then set your first event at a coffee shop. Put a huge stack of fliers in all your comic shops, coffee shops, and alternative record stores advertising your first event. Go to the local art school and tell them about your first event. Go to the lonely independent artist alley at the local-big-ass-cheesy-fan-boy comic convention, and tell them about your event.
If you start it, set a date, and promote it...you'll be amazed at the response. I came into our group a year after it started...when it was still pretty small. But I helped build the group and I made life-long friends here. Well worth my time!

Hallmark and the Art Institute. The two main reasons that Kansas City has so many artists and comic creators. The other is probably the low cost of living!
