About Me:Co-Owned the Comic Alternative in the early 80's and after finishing college and wearying of corporate management, returned to comic retail with Comickaze Comics Books and more in San Diego, CA in 1992. It was voted Best of San Diego in 2005, 2006 & 2007. Founded the Comic Book Industry Alliance, a groundbreaking industry advocacy and trade group in 1997. Founded AFC Studio and wrote and published my first comic work " The End" in 1999 and most recently in conjuction with IDW Publishing published the illustrated prose novel, " Wasting the Dawn". In 2006 was an Eisner Awards Judge for the San Diego Comic Con and also started the Comickaze Channel @ vMix.com to help all comic creators find a larger audience for their work, absolutely free. as a creator..."Scott (has) a knack for dialogue and narration, including some clever turns of phrase into the script."-- Randy Lander & Don MacPherson as an industry observer..."Robert Scott has frequently made me want to kick the crap out of him over the years. He does, however, have a broad experience that's worth listening to."--Warren Ellis Best Promotional Opportunity Ever:The Comickaze Channel on vMixIndustry Blog:IF I WERE IN CHARGE...(of the comic book industry) Where I share my "unique" look at things like: Hey Comic Publishers... SHOW ME THE MONEY! 11/20/06 Movie and Music studios are spending millions to promote sales of CD/DVDs and are consequently moving hundreds of thousands of units, including offerings based on comic properties whose titles are selling at less than 10% of their more glamorous relatives. Movies and Cd's cost far more to create and promote than comics and per title, are produced on a far less timely pace and at retail carry a much smaller retail value. Why do I say this? Well, movie franchises normally release installments once every 2-4 years and music albums every 1-2 years with singles sprinkled in. SRP on DVDs seems to run $20-25 and CDs run $15-20. Hey Robert!
First off thanks for adding me on. Second, I read your article of 11/20 and that's something I've been trying to wrap my head around for a while too. I think that one of the mistakes that creators in general make is that they don't pay much attention to promotion and marketing. That goes for the industry as a whole, if you ask me. The means are there but nobody seems to want to or have the ability to take advantage of those means. Whatever. I'm just saying I feel you on that one. Great article.

Thanks Jose, yeah promotion and marketing is probably the biggest failure of this industry.
Make sure you check out www.vmix.com/comickaze and see how easy it is to promote any comic work to a large, entertainment starved group, for free. |

Robert glad to see Comickaze on ComicSpace. I'm always open to talking shop in regard to working with retailers. And of course I still lurk at CBIA on routine (though I've been quiet lately).
But that will end, the new Bomb Queen solicitation is coming up, (March) and it has a variant / incentive cover - which will be something to toot about (though I did read on the CBIA how some variants were causing grief with retailers.
I'm also working on Shelf Talkers (PDFs from my website, and hard copy snail mail to interested retailers) Also, tinkering with the idea of sponsoring sale coupons for store customers. Say, readers of Bomb Queen can get $2 bucks off any comic of their choice (which I'd pay you in advance and send hard copy coupons snail mailed to match book orders.
Stuff like that. |
