ComicsCareer.Com launches new website for comics creators

Comics creators, it’s time to sharpen your pencils and ink up your brushes. ComicsCareer.Com is a new website just for the writers and artists who create comic books and graphic novels.

ComicsCareer.Com features news, interviews, message boards, and features of interest to comic book creators. “Young or old, aspiring or established, we hope to create a community where creators can find information that helps them advance their career in the comics business,” ComicsCareer.Com publisher Kirk Chritton said. “This site is definitely focused on the craft and practical aspects of a career in comics. It’s not about hyping next week’s new comics releases.”

Chritton says the site will not be limited to superhero comics. “This is a wonderful medium with diverse styles and genres. Our focus is broad and includes content related to independent publishers, self-publishers, web comics, and small press as well as the major comics companies.”

The website includes an ever-growing set of articles covering various aspects of working in the comics business, from the basic topics for novices, through tips on health care coverage for working freelance creators. In addition, the company produces a free email newsletter with a focus on motivational tips, news updates, and links to new resources on the web.

An in-depth “Yellow Pages” section lists contact information for comic book and graphic novel publishing companies. The feature includes a staff directory and links to the most current version of submissions guidelines for dozens of publishers.

ComicsCareer.Com is produced by a team with a history of helping creators launch successful careers in the comics industry. Chritton and the site’s managing editor, Kelly Bever, first published Comics Career Newsletter as a printed fanzine from 1988 to 1993. Chritton’s professional comics credits include work for Now Comics, Malibu Graphics, and a series of comic books for a major fast food chain. Bever is a professional educator and served as associate editor during the initial run of Comics Career Newsletter.

Several newsletter subscribers went on to successful careers in the comics industry. Jason Pearson (Body Bags, The Loners) won a 1990 art contest in Comics Career Newsletter. Pearson won the opportunity to get his first professional comics work published and has gone on to be a fan favorite artist who has drawn hundreds of comics.

Comics Career Newsletter also featured contributions by and interviews with many editors and established creators including Dick Giordano, Dave McKean, Paul Kupperberg, Dave Sim, Tom DeFalco, Mike Gold, Ande Parks, Joe Orlando, Mark Verheiden, Rob Davis, Rantz Hoseley, and Sam Kieth. “We’ll put as much of that older content up on the site as we can,” Chritton said.

“Of course, the world has changed since the 90s,” he added. “While we’ll include our past content proudly, ComicsCareer.Com is about the future. You don’t manage a successful career by worrying about the comics you created yesterday. You do it by focusing on the comics you’re creating today and tomorrow.”
