Update 3-3-2008:I have not been here in quite a while but I miss it. I'm just stopping by to say that I started a comic book blog called I read Comic Books and you can find it here http://ireadcomicbooks.blogspot.com/

Thanks!!!!
Kevin P. johnson

Update 3-18-2007: Currently adding a list of Graphic Novels and Trade Paperbacks that I recommend below. This will be updated over time.

Update 3-8-2007: If anyone cares I've updated my pull list as of the March 2007 Previews

Update 2-14-2007: So I kinda droped the superhero idea and am currently writing a new script for a different comic its more in the indie vibe I guess we will see how it goes I hope to get drawing soon, two full pages are written and hopefully the first draft will be done this week. I may make some print versions if I like what happens but as of this time I am only planning on a ComicSpace release.

Update 2-5-2007: Currently working on a comic to be released on Comic Space...just starting character development and 1st story line, it will be superhero type stuff with a little bit of everything thrown in.

Bio-Type Stuff
Why am I here? The answer is Uncanny X-Men #170 and I'll get to that later on.

My dream is to someday either work in the comics business or at least self publish my own comic book. I tried this once but failed I just could not get the art good enough and I could never allow myself to publish something I did not like.

I first started reading comics as a young child or the funnies as they used to be called in the newspapers. I liked Beetle Bailey and Peanuts, Andy Capp and quite a few others. I remember a collection of old Looney Tunes character comic books my grandparents had these were probably from the 1960's or early 1970's...I wish I had them today. These characters laid the groundwork for what I enjoy today.

At age 12 around June of 1983 there was a mistake made by the United States Postal Service...the one mistake that changed everything I ever knew about comics, the mistake that made me fall in love with characters that are heroes and villains in my imagination. The mistake was that someone in New Orleans, Louisiana on Painters Street had a subscription to the Uncanny X-Men from Marvel Comics and it was delivered to my grandparents house by accident. For some reason they gave it to me, maybe because I was there or maybe because of fate but issue #170 of The Uncanny X-Men was in my hands and this began my journey into comic books. For those of you who don't know this issue is when Storm fought Callisto of the Morlocks and defeated her making Storm the leader of the Morlocks. I eventually lost the issue and it took me quite a few years to come across another copy of this comic I probably have 3 or 4 copies now including a CGC Graded 9.6 copy (Although I cracked the case and have to get that fixed) it is one of my most prized possessions.

So I really got into comics at age 13 and Made Mine Marvel for the most part. I remember comics were .75 cents - .80 cents with tax so I started snagging my lunch money for comics...I was a kid and Spider-Man was more important that school lunch for sure. We had no Comic Book store in the town of Violet, Louisiana where I lived at that time (which was eventually destroyed by Hurricane Katrina years later) so I had to buy my comics off of spinner racks at the K&B Drug Store or Time Saver gas station, Winn-Dixie or even the old Hi-Lan Food Store. I loved Marvel Comics and that has love has remained until today.

Eventually I found out about a place called The BookWorm of New Orleans East and it was the most awesome place in the world to me but it was about 30 miles from where I lived so I was almost never able to go there. I started stopping in there a few years ago as an adult ocassionally just because of my memories of going there as a kid and the management was always so great. I don't know his last name but Terry was an awesome guy who lit up when he talked about comics and I miss that. Hurricane Katrina took his store from us all and I hope that he will re-open someday.

So at somepoint between the time I moved from Violet, Louisiana to Slidell, Louisiana I found an add in a comic book for a place called New England Comics in Brockton, MA and they promised guaranteed comics in NM condition and a free bag and board this was my answer to not haveing a Comic Shop near my home...my comics came to my door. It wasn't as awesome as the comic shops always seemed to me but it was a great way to know what I wanted would be there for me. I used New England Comics for several years until I actually quit reading comics...I started college and had no money and of course I was upset with all the gimmick costly covers coming out in the early 1990's late 1980's so I went to college in 1992 and stopped collecting comics about 98% not because I didn't still love the characters and the stries just had other things that needed to be done.

I guess it was 1999 or 2000 when I decided I wanted to get back into reading X-Men comics again and so I made a trip out to the Old Book Worm and then contacted New England Comics and soon I was back in the flow of finding back issues and getting the new stuff. I moved to Metairie, Louisiana and visited BSI Comics on Severn Avenue and there was a pretty awesome store they had lots of new comics and lots of old comics but I remained loyal to New England Comics due to the convenience and accuracy of ordering my comics by mail. After a few years with New England Comics and me having to move back to Slidell, Louisiana due to losing my job and pretty much starting over I found a new comic shop in Slidell back in late 2004 called Magic Comics & Hobbies it was really small but the owner David Strecker is awesome and he'd do whatever he could to get you what you needed. I split my order for a while with Magic Comics and New England Comics and eventually went 100% with Magic Comics & Hobbies.

I moved back to Metairie, Louisiana in 2006 and remained loyal to Magic Comics although I only go to get my comics every three or four weeks and I visit BSI Comics every few weeks too and actually run their eBay store for them.

I was very lucky in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina struck I had been living with my Mother for a while while trying to get my life back together here home was destroyed by the tidal surge that reached at least 8 feet where we lived but by a bizzare twist of fate or maybe God is a comic book collector but my comics stored about two miles away in a storage unit were unharmed there was serious flooding and tidal surge probably less than 1 mile away.

So anyway I'm a comic book fan, I love the art, I love the heroes, I love the villians and I love the stories...I even love that weird smell of an old comic shop. I hope to become friends with some new people here and share stories of how much comics are a part of your lives.

Town Called Dobson has been nominated for the 2008 Weblog awards for best webcomic. Please consider voting for the strip. You can vote everyday until Jan 13th, 2009.

I wanted to take some time in this new year to thank you folks for your support of me and my little comic strip Town Called Dobson. We crossed the 500th Strip threshold this past year, got printed in some great independent newspapers, got to show off how I create TCD at Adobe over the summer and the continued presence in the blogosphere is always a blessing. Without your support, readership and emails, TCD would never have made it so long. It is with the deepest heart I thank you all. It is vital that progressive issues are represented in editorial cartooning, especially in these days of dwindling news readership.

Your consistent support and strip devotion has earned Town Called Dobson a 2008 Weblog Award Nomination for Best Webcomic. I am stunned to be nominated and I am sure Karl Rove was secretly working behind the scenes to kill the nomination off, but "Hope" wins again!

Funny stuff man, hopefully I'll get my thing going soon too. I just started trying to figure out what my characters look like today and have to work on some more story this weekend. Its taking forever to even get started drawing...what's the secret?

Remove[ Posted by RudeAnimat0r on Mar 23rd, 2007 7:04 PM ]...

Not much of a secret, and it does take a while to develop a good concept, but don't lose heart. The most important thing is to write and draw something familiar to you, putting your own spin on things.

That's actually great advice...the story I'm working on right now is part me part fiction and lots of silliness. Whenever I get it done I'll let everyone on here know about it for sure. Thanks!

Hey man, thanks for the add. I remember X-men #170 as well. I finally talked my parents into letting me subscribe to X-men so I wouldn't have to pester them to take me to the store all the time. #170 was the third issue I recieved. It's still one of my favorite storylines. At any rate, catch you later.

Hi,
Also nice to meet you. I sure am glad my comics didn't get destroyed. That was a really bad time already and when I got back almost a month later to check my storage it was a great relief that I still had something from my past that made the future look a bit better...my music collection survived too so I was very lucky and know it everyday.

Thanks for the add. I see from your profile that your comic is taking some time to come to press. That's a position that I, for one, find myself in all the time - and I understand that it is par for the course for small-press comic book creators.

Of course, that doesn't put any sort of check on my collaborating artists' growing frustration.

Hey,
I've written one 8 page story most of a second 8 page story I have the third 8 page story in my head just have not had time to finish writing the second story and start writing the third and then I need a 4th 8 page story to do so that when I'm ready to start drawing I'll have 4 full stories to work with. I kinda decided on 8 page stories so that if I wanted to do mini comics or something it would be an easy transition. I hope to get the stories I have in my head written by the weekend and then see where the 4th story comes in. Having a job makes comic creating pretty hard to do.

Hope that all made sense.

I recommend Scott McCloud's book, like Understanding Comics for help with writing and drawing. He brings up some great points that you might not think about, or stuff that you might know subconsciously. We used his stuff as textbooks at SCAD.

Remove[ Posted by DorkinOutSince1971 on Feb 13th, 2007 1:12 AM ]...

Yeah I pick up Scott Mc Cloud's books everytime I'm in the bookstore. I've heard so much about how great they are I just have not broken down to buy them yet. I'll probably get Understanding Comics soon. I've got two comics I'd like to do I'll probably have to settle on one but I really just want to do it right and not be something that is meaningless. Thanks for the advice though I take it with great respect from someone who is already doing the comics thing. I look at what people like you are doing and I listen to the Indie Spinner Rack Podcast and I just want to be a part of the comics world. Thanks for the advice!!!

Thanks for the kind words. I also am working on a story and hope to soon post on here. I think we all wish we could live up to Stan Lee and Will Eisner but trying your best is all that matters. I have not done much art in the last few years and there is so much rust that I decided to go ahead and try something completely different than I've tried to do before. I've never put a comic out for the world to see before so I'm right there with you. Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll have something started and you can tell me how good or bad it is.

I'd like to read more and get some indy stuff too but more money and more time are not available. Gonna catch up on something tonight.
