The East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention
(ECBACC) Pronounced: “EKBOK” Founded A.D. 2002 Greetings, ECBACC Supporters! On the behalf of the ECBACC Executive Board, ECBACC STARS, ECBACC Synergy Group and ECBACC Publications, I would like to sincerely thank all of those who supported the 7th Annual East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention and made it the success that it was! Since May 2002, we have provided a unique space for talented men and women to discuss, articulate and develop their artistic and creative vision. Each year has been progressively better because of your support. Special thanks must be given to our ECBACC Pioneer Award recipient, Nichelle Nichols, whose graciousness is unparalleled; Nell Wilson (aka Fat Momma!) whose enthusiasm and affinity for the welfare of children was felt by all; and Ashley Woods who was this year’s ECBACC celebrated artist! Each represented well and exemplified this year’s ECBACC theme: Celebrating Black Women in Comics. Thanks to Rahnda Rize, Mark Hair, Asli Dukan, Richard Tyler, Smoke, Dawud Anyabwile, Mshindo I, Rich Watson, The Gritz ‘n’ Gravy Crew, Bro. Gregory Walker (aka Bro. G.), E. Steven Harris, Night Seeker, and the many others who are not mentioned herein, but who have sparked us already to prepare for the 8th Annual ECBACC, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2009! Until then! Yumy Odom, Founder, 1st World Komix / ECBACC E-mail: Yumy.Odom@ECBACC.com ![]() The 8th Annual East Coast Black Age Of Comics Convention Reception and Kick-off Friday, May 15, 2009 {tentative} The 8th Annual East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention (Full Day of convention) Saturday, May 16, 2009 {tentative} ![]() About the Glyph Comics Awards presented Friday: The Glyph Comics Awards recognize the best in comics made by, for, and about people of color from the preceding calendar year. While it is not exclusive to black creators, it does strive to honor those who have made the greatest contributions to the comics medium in terms of both critical and commercial impact. By doing so, the goal is to encourage more diverse and high quality work across the board and to inspire new creators to add their voices to the field. The awards are named for the blog Glyphs: The Language of the Black Comics Community, started in 2005 by comics journalist Rich Watson as a means to provide news and commentary of comics with black themes, as well as tangential topics in the fields of black science-fiction/fantasy and animation. About the East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention held Saturday: The East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention, in association with the Temple University Pan-African Studies Community Education Program, is an annual gathering of comic book creators and retailers who create and sell material that caters to black readers of all ages. In addition to selling their work, they also take part in panel discussions and self-publishing workshops for aspiring creators. The convention is held on the Temple University campus in Philadelphia each May. There is also a pre-show reception held at the African American Museum in Philadelphia. ECBACC is an outgrowth of the original Black Age of Comics Convention in Chicago, founded by Turtel Onli. For more information about ECBACC, contact event coordinator Maurice Waters.
