Wow, you are smart! I just had a look at your response to Khwan's questions. That helps me a lot as an artist, hopefully I won't make those mistakes in my work.

Drop by the Lounge any time, smart girl!

Kris, thanks for adding me! I, too, need to get back in tune with all of these great Shadowline books. Can't wait to get started.

Hi Editor Girl:

I have some questions for you. For help and advice. Maybe this can help others here?

1-Why do you think a comic book needs an editor? What do you do to help a book?

2-What are the biggest problems and mistakes that you see many times that you have had to fix as an editor?

3-You are talking to a writer and artist (they not have to be new artist or writer-they can be professionals)-before starting a new book, what warnings, tips, advice, suggestions, etc would you give them?

Thank you in advance for your responses!

KHWAN

P.S. I've seen you posting around on other people's pages-you sound pretty damn cool and pretty damn smart!

Thanks for the compliments! I'll answer these questions from the viewpoint of an indy editor, not one from the Big Two.

1a- Because most writers and artists are too close to their own work to view it objectively and see the weaknesses.

1b- Hands down, the most frequently asked question. So frequent, I typed up my response to refer people to when they ask. It's different for every book. Read my blog entry called “What My Job Entails”.

2- Off the top of my head (I’m sure there is more):

Writers: Poor transitions, too much dialogue in one panel (the “I want to write like Bendis” syndrome), not introducing the characters properly; assuming the reader knows everything already (each issue is someone’s first!), unnecessary splash pages, too much detail in the panel descriptions (choking the artist creatively), writing stagnant layouts (the entire issue is 5-panel pages), and not bolding the proper words in the dialogue.

Artists: too many mid-shots (putting the “camera” on a tripod instead of letting it fly, so to speak), unvaried panel layouts, filling in all the gutters with black or a gradient regardless of what is visually needed, not leaving enough airspace for word balloons, tangents (heads touching panel borders, lines connecting in odd places taking away depth, etc.)

3- Don’t expect to make a lot of money. Be prepared to end your series by issue 4, just in case. Start off small, because epic storylines don’t sell in today’s market (in other words, use one issue for set-up, not an entire arc). Start your first issue with a “bang!” because you have about 5 pages to hook a reader in. Every panel needs to move the story forward in some way, if it doesn’t, cut it out. Going over 22 pages doesn’t sell more copies of a book, it just puts more work upon the art team and causes things to run late.

That's because I'm trying to be all professional-like and have this be just for magazine-related business. I have a separate one going for my own comic book concern as well. Sly, I know. ;^)

Thanks for the add, Kris! I'll be bugging you on the Image boards for sure.

Kris,
AWESOME to hear from ya!
GW is ... well... GW!
You know he is a marketing machine with what he works on!
I just talked with him the other night, he and Fran will be spending New Years with us this year.

At any rate, I will be keepin' an eye out for new Shadowline stuff.. especially BOMB QUEEN related!
May have to bust ya' out a pinup of her for sheeots & giggles.
That character is just too cool...!
Happy Holidays!

Re: your comment on my page

Sell 10,000 copies? I thought I did that already? (if you add up the previous issues, hahah!). Also I'm fine with whatever Derek's "package" may contain, that's good.

Also, yes, I did use the Shadowline tag, and I'm getting my marketing data together. But on a personal note; sadly I'm not using the treadmill like I should. Staying up to the stupid hours, eating badly, and just not exercising is making it all an uphill battle. In total, I've used the fancy treadmill a whole 2 times, and both of those were short walks. Even worse... I discovered the so-call hip feature of hooking it up to the Internet is just lame. I'm on a mac computer using Safari browser and the damn treadmill ONLY supports Windows. Well, at least I have the thing set up near the TV. Perhaps I'll break down and watch something for a change. God knows I look like an idiot never having watched a single episode of HEROES, or only 4 episodes of the first season of LOST.

Sorry, I'm on yet another Kitty rant.... back to the art table...

Mmmm, cheesecake. And Mountain Dew. Cheesecake and Mountain Dew, that's the ticket. They keep me inking until 4 am.

Hey, Kris! Thanks for adding me to your friends list. I would have thought you'd forgotten me by now. But then I remembered you're an editor. And an editor never forgets. Or is that an elephant? I can't remember. Because I'm not either.

And no, I'm not calling you an elephant.
