Based in Cambridge, UK, in a random little village of obscurity, Emma Vieceli is a key admin member of the UK manga group, Sweatdrop Studios. Seemingly destined to wander the world as an impoverished bohemian, she tried and enjoyed several avenues, from music, to theatre to TV, before finally giving in to her inner geek and finding a home in her beloved comics. ^_^ A winner of Tokyopop's first UK and Ireland Rising Stars of Manga competition and now signed up to work on a graphic novel with Spacedog and Tokyopop, her professional appearances range from magazine articles (Neo, Artist & Illustrator), through tabletop card game illustration (Herocard:Cyberspace) to having contributed to several tutorial and resource books (Digital Manga Techniques, Draw manga). Her first graphic novel, Hamlet, was released February 2007. For some reason, she finds the word 'badgers' to be highly amusing.

As a BBC junkie (from America without paying a license fee) I'll look for this. Won't this be archived on the website, as well? 2 Replies [ Latest posted on June 2nd, 2007 10:53 PM ]

sorry to hear about the hacker ;_; As for sweatdrop..haha...not exactly 'work' there. We're a group of artists who print together. I'm one of the admin...bascially that means we work our asses off for the sheer love of comics. It's all done alongside our real jobs as a hobby. So many people get a different idea...but we take that as flattery. ^_~ So don't be jealous...you can do exactly the same! Keep up the great work ^_^ |

I am soooo looking forward to Hamlet! I read Goethe and some Shakespeare, inspiration for writing our stories. I am glad to see manga inspired by literature!
Nice work...will be following you!

Hamlet looks beautiful. I had to defend The shakespeare manga series from my aunt the other day, who thought the whole idea was a travesty. 3 Replies [ Latest posted on February 1st, 2007 2:36 PM ]

Awww - well, thank you!! I'm sorry that she feels that way. I've said it before, but I'm a shakespeare fanatic...even before I was into manga I loved the bard's work. I wrote a dissertation on Shakespeare at university...so assure her that I'm not someone about to destroy his subtext with giant mecha ^_~
If anything can spread his work further afield, then it has to be a good thing. ^_^ |

[ Posted by footloose on Feb 1st, 2007 2:24 PM ]...
well considering you've used the original text for dialouge, I don't see how a manga version is any different from the myriad film adaptions, or even from how different theatre companies might interpret the play. I thought it was an unfair comment on manga as "low art", so I felt I had to defend you on behalf of manga creators everywhere. |

I've got a look on your Hamlet pages and I like the results. I must be honest, it suffers a bit with "media translation" – but Hamlet is a complicated story to adapt for comic media anyway. I think you're doing a good work. :) 1 Reply [ Latest posted on February 1st, 2007 1:16 PM ]

The editing is a shame of course...but considering the limitations of space, I'm pretty pleased with Richard's decisions. ^_^ |

wow, your hamlet story is coming along so well, its so impressive *_* I dont think i minded the order, wasn't even paying attention to that, no just eyeballing the art. 1 Reply [ Latest posted on February 1st, 2007 1:15 PM ]
