MediaConnection Wrap Up - Week ending May 8, 2009

Fox renews 'Fringe'

Fox has renewed J.J. Abrams' thriller "Fringe" for a full 22-episode second season.

"'Fringe' proved to be a notable addition to our schedule all season, and it really has fans buzzing as it builds to a fantastic season finale," said Kevin Reilly, president of entertainment at Fox. "J.J. and the whole Bad Robot team have been phenomenal partners, and we look forward to years of making great television with them."

'Deadpool' spinoff in works at Fox

Fresh off the muscular performance of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" at the boxoffice, Fox has thrown into development a spinoff featuring Deadpool, the wise-cracking mercenary played in the film by Ryan Reynolds.

'Robot Chicken' crew sets new series

Adult Swim is looking to clone the success of its highest-rated show, "Robot Chicken," with "Titan Maximum," a new comedy series from the creative team behind "Robot" that shares DNA with its predecessor: It too is a stop-motion animation series about robots.

Nicktoons orders more 'Wolverine'

On the heels of last weekend's strong box office opening for "Wolverine," the Nicktoons cable network has ordered another 26 episodes of "Wolverine and the X-Men" from Marvel Animation. That brings the show's order to 52 half-hour episodes. The new animated series follows Wolverine as he reunites the X-Men.

Marvel assembles cartoon 'Avengers'

Marvel announced "Avengers," based on the long-running comic, will feature some of the company's most popular characters, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Giant Man, and the comely Wasp, who fight forces of evil that no single hero stands a chance against. "(This) continues our plan to complement each of our tentpole live-action features with an animated series," said Marvel president of animation Eric Rollman, who is exec producing with Simon Philips.

Warner Archive offers Tarzan films on order

Five Tarzan films from the early ’50s are now being offered for the first time on any home entertainment format through Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group’s new manufacturing-on-demand service.

Available at WarnerArchive.com, Tarzan and the She-Devil, Tarzan and the Slave Girl, Tarzan's Magic Fountain, Tarzan's Peril and Tarzan's Savage Fury, all starring Lex Barker, are part of the Warner Archive Collection, which churns out made-to-order discs from a selection of 191 classic studio films priced at $19.95 each. When purchased together, the five Tarzan films are being sold at a 50% discount for $49.95 (original price $99.75).
