Yeah, I'm randomly not enamored of this so far. I never used MySpace (I have no desire to have my movements tracked more easily by the CIA, thank you) so this is all weird and not overly inspiring. Let's just say that I'm used to the... well, easiness over at ye ole LJ. Right, this is kind of a comics blogish thing with opinions, right? Fine, fine. I'll just start by saying that I am randomly kind of unimpressed with comics in general at this point. Maybe because I'm a girl who falls into that 'weird' category of actually liking 'male' comics. All the stuff that's getting marketed in 'my' direction is all that Runaways twaddle. Oh, and don't even get me stared on Emma Frost/Scott Summers, because I lose my composure on that subject very easily. I never thought I'd yen for the "Good Old Days" of cheesey plots, overdone dialogue, and weirdly inked art. I'm twenty-freaking-six years old. I should not be flailing at fate for taking my comics away. Seriously though, I think my main bone of contention about current comics is that they've lost the little tiny vingette stories. Remember the Marvel Holiday issues? Or the DC ones? Hell, I have two or three Vertigo ones in my collections. The little short stories that give the readers more access to the 'softer' side of Our Heroes? Moments where they're allowed to be human or weak or give the audience a connection to them? Yeah, I miss those. I miss stuff like the Danger Tub, and the baseball games, and X-Force going on vacation together and getting sicced with Mr. Impossible's slacker kids. Edgy is fine and has it's place. I won't argue against that because some of the books I've loved the most have been the ones to take chances. But you know what makes that edge all the more interesting and compelling? SOME FREAKING CONTRAST, PEOPLE. Peace out, kids. Be kind to each other. *** Current status: Lapsed comic geek. Currently watching: Law and Order Criminal Intent (in copious amounts), City Confidential, Midsomer Murders, and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Currently reading (book): Wintersmith by Terry Pratchett Currently following (comics): Cable and Deadpool, Battlestar Galactica, The Phantom, Stargate: Atlantis, Wraithfall, and Uncanny X-Men (for Jimmy.) Previously followed (comics): X-Men, AgentX, Deadpool, Uncanny X-men, Excalibur, X-Force, X-Factor, GenX, Buffy, Angel, Ghost, Savage Dragon, The Sensational She-Hulk, John Carter of Mars, Wonder Man, Ghost Rider, Books of Magic, Sandman, Death (both mini's), Cable, Batgirl, Birds of Prey, Nightwing, Gotham Knights, Robin, Xenozoic Tales, Musicbox, and Young Justice. Favorite characters: Cable, Domino, Tim Hunter, Molly, Barbara Gordon, Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Cassandra Cain, Jean Grey, Scott Summers, Rachel Summers, Rose Walker, Forge, James Proudstar, Dinah Lance, Jack Tenrec, Hannah Dundee, Nick Fury, and Rogue. Favorite authors: Jeph Loeb, Neil Gaiman, David Byrne, Peter David, Gail Simone, Kelly Puckett, Pete Woods, Jill Thompson, Mark Shultz, Jim Starlin, and Fabian Nicieza. Favorite artists: Todd Nauck, Damion Scott, Andrew Pepoy, Greg Land, Mark Shultz, Jim Lee, Ian Churchill, Patrick Zucher, Scott McDaniel, and Chris Moreno. Now, I like comics. I like them a lot. I even like the comics that people don't think 'girls' should like. Which, honestly, is a huge crock because The Punisher is just as emo and soapy as General Hospital on its worst day. However, I will say that I do like character-driven stories that allow their people to develop and move on naturally. This is probably why I don't read many comics anymore. Anyway, soldier on, Fabian Nicieza and Nicole Wiley! Soldier on! Oh, and I used to update the largest Dick Grayson/Barbara Gordon fanfiction archive on the interweb, Birds of a Feather. Except not so much anymore. |
