I'm not sure if you are aware of this but there is another to getting yourself published other than bowing to the big men. www.lulu.com. I'm not a spokesperson for them or anything, but I was able to self publish my book through them. I'm sure there's probably some other sites out there like this one but it's on demand-publishing. Meaning, you don't have to pay for 50 books at a time... and other people can go to the site and order your books right from the site. Pretty cool and it's a lot more flexible for me. I'm sure in the long run, it;s still cheaper to get all of the books printed in a run, but I was looking at around $300 for a run of 50. I don't have $300. I don't even have $3. I'm a father of 2 and a home owner. Anyway, if you didn't already know, now you do.
