Can't help being an onliner

I have just launched my second webcomic, Darik.

www.darik.co.uk.

Which is an ongoing Phantasy and Sci-Fi comic serial.

Oh - and why am I in the game? What is it all about? I'll try to explain:

Who invented the reinvention?
It wasn't just that I found out that the internet was an intelligent means of publishing. For me, right from the start, what I was looking for was, well, in a way the reinvention of comics. Before you start laughing at me, let me tell you this: I didn't know Scott McClouds book "Reinventing Comics" at that time. The fact that I wasn't the first to get the great idea, doesn't make it any less so.

So, it's about finding a way of making comics that uses the computer-screen just as lovingly as the oldstyle artist uses the white paper. There are many ways of doing that - and I've seen quite a few interesting examples from all over the world.

Tell you all about my fetish
My own first attempt at a webcomic, www.bananastreet.com (doesn't exist anymore) was a thoroughly animated flash thing, exclusively in full-screen mode, and with a real virtual street, the street of Nansensgade, in Copenhagen where I live. And then there was a problem with Windows SP2, which rather put an end to generating full-screen from a website. Damn!

Still have this fetish about full-screen though. Why? well, I think that the only satisfactory way to view any kind of graphics, is full-screen mode, the same way that a printed piece of paper respects the graphics displayed there. You don't use a lot of the paper for something else than the subject matter of the book.

The Darik Reader
So I've made a flash application, The Darik Reader. The Reader imports files directly to your computer and the comic pages can be viewed full-screen. Of course you have to let the Reader go online in order to work. There are many free preview pages and lots of bonus material with the Reader.

The Reader also features a real avatar chat - Darik Virtual Chat. Below, you can get an impression of how the male and female avatars look - and how they work (Or at least you can, if the gif-animation works. Sometimes it gets stuck, and you have to refresh the page to get it moving again).

You can download the Darik Reader here:

The Darik Reader

The Reader works on PC, Windows and is made for the traditional computer screen format - not widescreen.

Thanks for the nice words about Rex. We're really proud to be a part of that project.

Your Darik Reader application interests me. I'm going to play around with it later when I have more time. I agree that the full-screen experience is superior to .jpgs on a web page but so far, I haven't seen an implementation that I liked as much as CDisplay. It's going to be interesting to see what new formats and standards come about in the next few years. Kudos for being on the cutting edge.

hello!
its very nice to meet you also!
i read about you not knowing about Scott Mclouds book..
i am sure yours would be much more interesting anyways!
i mean, he does offer great advice, but gets a bit wordy and makes things seem harder than they are sometimes!

:)

Hey, thanks! I know exactly what you mean. McCloud is a smart guy, and I respect him a lot. But he, and those who make digital comics just like the guru prescribes, are very theoretic about it. I've always prefered to find my own way of doing things. That is also more fun, don't you think?

Oh Heya! Very cool technical innovation with the full page flash stuff! IE7 and Firefox2 and Vista's gimped passport functions have completely destroyed my ability to upload to even C-Space Galleries :-0 Ain't tech great!-LB!
