"…There is nothing left that is sacred in the slaughterhouses of today. There is no memory and no conscious awareness of the choice to take an animal’s life that we may live and feast. As for me, I will choose to bring back that memory, and to take life by my own hand with full awareness of what I do and why. I will make sacrifice. This is my choice, to be a conscious carnivore.

Site of the DayTHE ORMES SOCIETY- I had the great pleasure to be introduced to this site and this organization by the founder Ms. Cheryl Lynn, at the NY Con. The ORMES SOCIETY is about the historic and largely neglected contribution of women of color in the medium, and more than that it's about introducing you to the wealth of creators/cartoonists deserving of a wider audience. Mike Hodel's Hour25 -Is a site that appears to be irregularly updated, but it has an archive of some really great audio interviews (The Tananarive Due interview being a favorite). I'm not a huge fan of Neil Gaiman's Sandman work, but I love his audio work, as well as some of his films, and some of his non-sandman Graphic Novels. But beyond just comics, this is a great interview on Freedom of Speech, the 2000 election, and the COMIC BOOK LEGAL DEFENSE FUND. Chief among them the EC Archives.

I think one reason EC was attacked by their competitors of the time (DC and Timely and a horde of others) is of course their popularity, but I think it was also their sensibility.
They were really, surprisingly... a very socially conscious company, and at times used the trappings of the medium to speak out against prejudice, police brutality, antisemitism, and was one of the first companies to portray people of color in a comic as something other than the Eisner and Mckay biglipped step-an-fetchit stereotypes. Particularly in their Shock Suspenstories series.
Other companies were doing the horror, and the scifi, but no other company was doing the message story. And after ECs demise it would be two decades before any other comic company tried.
It could be that EC was really on trial, not for introducing children to terror; but in the 40s and 50s of the time, for having the temerity to speak to children... of tolerance.
So that's one reason I'll be picking up the new EC Archives: Shock Suspenstories Volume 1 with an Intro by Steven Speilberg. Much thanks is due to Bill Gaines for producing the work, and Russ Cochran for his decades long efforts to keep the work in print, and significant to a new generation.
Go here for more details: http://www.blacksuperhero.com/articles/art5-Hoffman.html- reprints a pretty darn informative article from the New Haven Advocate
and the Around Comics podcast has two great shows on EC Comics, including a great interview with Russ Cochran. Go, find, listen. Here endeth the rant. :) .
**************** Favorite Current Comics 2008:[You'll notice Marvel is pretty under-represented. I don't buy Marvel Comics, except for the odd, must have trade or two; due to the obtrusive nature of ad placement in their comics.]. SPECIAL FORCES #1- Best thing Kyle Baker has done in years! Phenomenal layouts and Art! I'm on board. One of the books I'll be looking forward to from Image. Highly Recommended! ZERO KILLER #1-2- Loving this series. WATER WORLD meets DMZ, but stronger and more fun than either of those influences. It's on my Buy List! CRIMINAL- (being an exception to my Marvel rule, being under the reader friendly ICON Imprint) Issues #1-10. Very, very rarely does something live up to its hype. This lives up to the hype, Brubaker knocking it out the park. Highest recommendation! FELL #1-8- Best of 2006, 2007, and so far best of 2008. Ellis and Templesmith producing their best work in years. Near Misses:WALKING DEAD- I loved the first 24 issues, two years of the series. I proudly own the omnibus and consider it comics at its finest. However, in 2006 the series jumped the shark, with too much sensationalism and sadism for my liking. Currently off the book, but I'll keep an ear to the ground in case it ever recaptures the vibrancy of those first two years. **************** For more pop-culture reviews check out my blog at Heroic TimesCompletely unrelated Pet Peeve-There should be a law against sites that require you to have Flash or Javascript installed to view their site. But no definitely a great panel, and sorry I missed you. PM me I'll hit you with my info, let me know the next con you'll be doing. I'm definitely going to try to make San Diego and SPX, and not sure what else.

That Lobo cover taunts me. I have the second issue, but I keep losing eBay auctions for the first issue just before they close. Best wishes. 1 Reply [ Latest posted on February 9th, 2007 4:15 PM ]

Hi Mr. TI,
As I understand it, the 2nd issue is even rarer than the first so I think you're ahead of the curve. But I'll keep an eye out for the first issue for you.
If the concept of Lobo grabs you, try Reno Jones: Gunhawk who I believe was introduced in 1971 in WESTERN GUNFIGHTERS by either Gary or Mike Friedrich (were these two brothers?)then got his own short lived series GUNHAWKS in 1972. I think the only issue I'm missing of that run is # 6.

RE: This weeks Auctions! A 48 print David Mack German Kabuki Portfolio How I'd adore to, but you don't even want to KNOW what I'm reduced to just to get the cash for catching up on "The Alchemy". Yes, I am THAT far behind. So thanks, tell the Honourable David Mack he's worshipped, it's just he worshipped by a broke single Mom! lol! Well Lily, don't know David Mack personally so can't pass on your broke single mom love [though I'm quite appreciative of it :)], but thanks for checking out those prints! :)
I checked out a couple issues of Mr. Mack's current storyline, that's the Alchemy right? Good stuff! I wasn't crazy about his Kabuki work when first introduced to it, but his work continues to grow, and evolve, and experiment with the medium.
I think Steranko in a recent interview alluded to David Mack as one of the artists he was impressed with. That's pretty darn high praise.

Dear Heroictimes, Thanks for understanding - anything I can do to improve your grandkid's chances of health and wealth, let me know. Oh, regarding David Mack, I should say I am not as objective as possible - I was married to a Yakuza and lived in Japan, so there's that - memories and appreciation of a complex culture well portrayed - but there is also the increasing artistic beauty of his work - by "Skin Deep" & "Metamorphis" he was mixing mediums and styles in a way that made it very confusing to follow, but I didn't care cause when I got it, I was in heaven. Sorta the mental equivalent of reading Grant Morrison. Every time I figure out something he's written I feel like I just got my MIT diploma. I'm going to request you as a firend, if that's ok. With Love From Newark, NJ, Lily |

Thanks for the comment, I believe Paul Smith to be the forgotten "great" penciller of the original X-Men series, and what he did on Golden Age was sensational. peace and love, billy k 1 Reply [ Latest posted on January 18th, 2007 3:06 PM ]

Yeah I absolutely love his work on the Uncanny X-men. I think he was on for just ten issues, from 165 to 175. As much as I'm a fan of Byrne's run, and even Neal Adams run, for me Paul Smith's work, as well as Claremont's writing stands out as that series... at its best.
Infact I sold all of my X-men collection quite a while back, except for those ten books, and issue #182.

Thanks Tony, anytime.
I checked out early issues of your Travelers. Very funny, big fan. The others are new to me, but sound interesting.
In regards to Travelers, I notice you're on issue #25 of that, do you already have trades out, or any plans for an omnibus you can feed to the bookstores?
I know Diamond is hard on small publishers, so trades may open the bookstore market for you. But I'm sure you're already pursuing this.
Keep up the strong work. And maybe I'll run into you up in New York.

Thank you very much I hope to get rid of the stigma around digital art (whether people know how to vocalize the problems or not) since I don't think it's as limited as what's been shown. I love Fell! Nice to have some self-contained stories again. |

Lol! Hi Mocha thanks for the reply. Yeah you'll find I'm not a huge Marvel Fan, though when they do good, I do try and sing their praises. In 2005 they had some stuff I liked, just not so much in 2006.
And just for me, everybody's mileage will vary, but I felt they really started treating their readers like crap in 2006. It was like a continuous year of them slapping the readers in the face, and not talking about delays here, but more a very visible corporate mindset of putting advertisers first and readers eighteenth. :)
LOL. Anyhow, thanks for leaving me feedback! Glad you are a fellow FELL, FIRESTORM fan. And please, keep dropping by. :)
