Header: The lengthening shadow
Bulletin: Back on August 12, the world grew a little dimmer due to the passing of Mike Wieringo. His artwork, for me at least, embodied wide-eyed youthfulness. There was an energy in his work that seemed to coalesce everything that is wondrous, innocent, excited and humorous. I truly envied his artistic vision. He seemed to be able to see things from the perspective of a happy child, and that made his work uplifting. But now he's gone, and with him, his unique style and perspective.

I'm left to wonder how he did it. How he so ably distilled that which is BEST in human nature and manifest it with such apparent ease. How he so simply conveyed what is so bright and right about us. Try as I might, I cannot. I haven't the chops. Or maybe I haven't the wisdom. My eyes and heart see so much that is dark, overshadowed or hopeless. I can't see the light as clearly as he did, and he's not here to help me see it anymore. I'll truly miss that.



"Prince of Saturn" is one of the last images Mr. Wieringo posted on one of his online galleries. I find the image compelling. I have projected some aspect of myself into him. Because, for the rest of my life, very much like Mr. Wieringo's prince, I'll be stranded on that alien world, wondering...
