Mort began to sell comics at age 11, became the top-selling gag cartoonist in the country by 1949, sold Beetle to King Features on his first submission in 1950 (same year as Peanuts), and went on to syndicate more strips than any other artist in the business. http://www.upress.state.ms.us/books/503 BIOGRAPHY:It's all Chance, Chris & Dik Browne's fault. I grew up next to these guys & was forever inspired and amazed to watch them make comics in their basement. Once I learned that people actually thought up gags & drew cartoons like Hagar, I knew that was the world I wanted to join. Since then, I've created a number of strips and have worked on panel gags for magazines. I was liberated to write screenplays because it broke me out of the one-to-three panel format & allowed serious subject matter, and I've been liberated still by graphic novels and comic books because they combine my passions as a writer and cartoonist. Some of my publications include Rolling Stone, USA Weekend, Photographers Forum, The Japan Times, the comic book Dark Horrors II, Womans World, Valley Comic News, and the comic art book Mort Walker Conversations (U Press of Miss). This book was a great project because it helped me to get to know the other side of Hi & Lois- the wonderful Walker family. I've been lucky that my film writing & work has been recognized and awarded by The Nicholl Fellowships (Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences), PBS, The Sundance Film Festival, & many competitions like Scriptapalooza and others. I made an experimental short, I Was A Dancer, last year that has screened at festivals and museums worldwide. I also love to share classic, foreign and animated films with communities and have programmed movie events for over twenty years as a film series director. That image of the Brownes drawing in their basement still sticks as a life dream, though I'd like to see more sunshine & less laundry. I live in Vermont with my wife and our dog, Tango, and I enjoy working on creative projects and helping kids to pursue their artistic dreams. I'm currently submitting Picture Books, Comics, and Scripts to agents, editors, and producers. |
