In September, 1997, the first issue of my Western/horror comic book series Desperadoes appeared on the stands. 10 years later, in September 2007, there will be a special 10th anniversary publication of the most recent miniseries, Desperadoes: Buffalo Dreams, which will include a special pin-up by my pal Shannon Eric Denton, a look back over the last ten years, and art by all the artists who have done Desperadoes comics (John Cassaday, John Lucas, John Severin, Jeremy Haun, and of course Alberto Dose, who drew Desperadoes: Buffalo Dreams.

I was interviewed about the ten years of Desperadoes by Scoop!, the pop culture webzine from Diamond Galleries, and you can read the interview here. They also included some of the brilliant cover art by Cassaday, Severin, and Dose.

In other news, a new project has just been announced, called Graveslinger. This is also a Weird Western comic book miniseries, which I'm writing with the aforementioned Mr. Denton. The art on this one is by a videogame concept artist named John Cboins, and it's pretty amazing. I'll get some pages up before it's released this October. Although at a glance one would think two supernatural westerns might be one too many, these two comics are very different in tone and style and execution.

Here's the official announcement of the new book:

Shannon Eric Denton's and Jeff Mariotte's Graveslinger debuts this October. Published by Shadowline/Image Comics, this full-color, four-issue miniseries is a Western featuring art by video game concept artist and comics newcomer John Cboins.

Graveslinger begins in Gila Flats, Arizona Territory, 1873 as undertaker Frank Timmons accidentally unleashes 117 executed killers from their graves at Arizona Territory's Gila Flats Prison. When those undead killers go on a murder spree that claims the life of his beloved—and a sinister, mystical being enlists him to reclaim the killers' souls—Frank knows he's in for an adventure he might not survive.

Mariotte says of Graveslinger, "When Shannon brought this idea to me, I had to get on board. Now that we've added the brilliant John Cboins and letterer extraordinaire Ed Dukeshire, I know we have a comic readers will love. Most creators never get to do a Western series they're proud of, and I've had two. I am a lucky guy."

Valentino adds, "I've long admired Jeff and Shannon's work and have wanted to work with both for years. While not a big fan of the Western genre, I felt that this story was unique and added a twist to the well-worn plots. And with the recent success of DC's wonderful Jonah Hex series, I believe that the comics audience is ready to be re-introduced to the genre. We're proud to be publishing Graveslinger."
