You're probably tired of hearing how great you are. I'd just like to say I admire your ability to do different genres, and make it all look easy.
'N Thanks for the add.

Excellent art. Great work. Not just pro-comic quality, but film quality. The first thought to hit me was "Howls moving castle".

Hey Joel, thanks for the add! I was just checking out all the other stuff you've done in your portfolio (I'd only seen Robotika) and it's truly great stuff. I hope we can find a project to work on together in the future!

Really nice work! We don't have any really amazing cons in the U.K. either unfortunately. I always wanted to go to one! The day will come...

None in the UK?? That's a shocker. But at least you have design conventions often?

I've swung by the Lounge.

We have loads of other stuff, so I can't complain about that- especially living in London!

Funny I can't reply anymore to what you answered me. (this reply system needs some fixing)

For Rox35, the director visited my pastor once years ago, I showed him my work (I was a highschool student back then) and sort of stayed in touch as a supportor since, but lately I haven't been really supporting him finanically. He seems to be making himself known around the Christian world though.

From the sound of Philippines comic market, the situation sounds alot like Taiwan's and American market for original titles, occansionally some american titles will make it big, like Megatokyo.com, he made it big with the original title because he consistantly keep up with his online audience. It seems like Philippines are doing better export wise because of the language consistancy with the Americans, english. Taiwan's comic hasn't yet come over here to the US, because most people are not good with english, rather they are good with Japanese, so some work flows to Japan and Korea instead of here. I am hoping someday I can help bring it here... because some creators definitately can compete with Japanese creators by now.

It's the same everywhere, starting with original titles are usually difficult unless you make it into the main stream publishers, but usually those publishers already have a very specific set of directions and the deals are usually not great for the creators. (such as giving up over 50% of the rights etc) Especially in the US, the rights deal is such a problem.

Right now Tokyopop is one of the known publishers that come up with original titles each year, but majority are not doing so great, they are forced to shrink the size of their project from 3 books to 1 book, which.... I don't think it's the best management, but they are probably lacking in choices.

I have visited and looked at other smaller publishers, their book usually don't hit the bookshelves in major bookstores at all, usually just the local ones, you just can't make it big with that kind of marketing. I know of one publisher that's in touch with Filipinos, "Seven Seas" the publisher is really just 2 persons, but they hired Filipino artists to do work for them and publish here. It seems to do ok. American fans follow any asian made comics thinking they are more authentic, which could be true... but I do think some american artists do manga just as fine.

Jason de Angelis of Seven Seas did get in touch with me before - but even I don't consider my style as manga. The Filipinos who now work for Seven Seas used to produce their own manga for the local market. The word was that their manga always sold out (it was very well done - and in color), but in the end the sales weren't enough reason to maintain production. Sponsors or advertisers were needed - but advertisers tend to shy away from comics here. My guess is because they assume there is too much "fanboyism" in it. Advertisers however have no qualms putting their ads in W.I.T.C.H. and other foreign titles.

On my blog I mention that skilled manga artists here don't go hungry. The exchange rate allows them to make a living just from doing US manga (and the same may be said about their publishers.) So any good manga artist seeking a career in comics is enticed to work on US titles. But of course not everyone can do manga and get away with making it look authentic. I myself consider the "flavor" of southeast asian manga art to taste a little more like Japan than most American manga. As for story, I prefer genuine sushi.

ohhhh, you are in touch with Rox35, I have contacted them before. :)
I'm curious about the comic market in Philipines, how is it over there?

You have contacted Rox35? Cool! What was it for? And did you get to view the animations at roxtoonz?

The comic market in the Philippines is trying to reclaim a glory that not a lot of Filipinos in their 20s can yet appreciate. Yet the new blood being infused into the production of local content today makes it an exciting struggle to be a part of. Comics that sell well here would be titles from abroad (translated manga & US comics) and those that receive wider distribution. Manga is a very popular style here.

Local independent titles don't often get far, most creators have to focus on "real" jobs to survive our economy. As a result, comic book anthologies are the IN thing here (as are illustrator agents) If ever you do drop by, and only have a bit of cash for local comics (in english), do try out the one-shot anthologies if you find them.

Hey bro, your style is very rich with detail and if you can beat the deadlines in comics (and show the studios that you can also do environments and storytelling) I believe there will be a lot of opportunity for you - more so than for me!

I personally would have a difficult time meeting deadlines if I pushed myself to do the level of detail you do. If you find that meeting deadlines is difficult, you may either simplify or work for concept design for games, or both!

Make a website for yourself as soon as you are able!

Thanks for the comment. I keep pushing myself to improve so hopefully in a few more years I will be embarrased about the art I am doing now:)

Your artwork really nice by the way. The growth in complexity and style is really nice as well.

Amazing colorist. He knows his stuff.
Don't forget the little people (me) when you're rich and famous....or when you need flats... hehehe.^_^

Hey Joel!
Yeah, sorry I couldn't match the colors to the pages you did with the other colorist so unfortunately I had to redo everything. It happens. I don't mind at all if you still want to post them to show your talent. You did a great job on the pages.
Best,
Jay
