Not sure how related it is, but a lot of print Newspapers are struggling or folding now. And that would effect how much they had around to pay syndicated comic artists. I dunno if circulation effects his pay rate, but if he got x amount per paper sold, his income would go down when the paper sales slumped.

Most newspaper artists that I'm aware of are featured in multiple papers, so maybe he just didn't try to get in enough papers to really make good money off it.
