Bulletin: I was shopping for Liquid Paper in my local Dollar Store, and stumbled upon a sight that I thought I would never again see-- Boxes of Quisp cereal! I have been mourning the removal of Quisp from the marketplace for over 30 years, and could hardly believe my eyes to witness its Lazarus like return from the dead, with the original style artwork on the packaging! The back of the box has a comic, done in a John Kricfalusi style, and introduces a sidekick for Quisp named "Quunchy". As delighted as I am to see Quisp back in action, the addition of Quunchy is unnecessary. He looks like a shrunken head with his lips sewn shut. (How can he enjoy the delicious crunchy sweet corn taste of the cereal that way?) The poor sap doesn't even have any lines in the comic. (Again, probably has something to do with those lips being sewn shut.) At least there's no sign of that blow-hard Quake. As a Quisp supporter, it was always frustrating that Quake won every single contest between the two. Even that damn Orange Quangeroo would beat my guy. It's good to see that Quisp has the final victory, the only one that matters, lo these many decades later.
Of course I bought a box, and let me tell you, the flavor is as unchanged as the Jay Ward style graphics. Huzzah! The little sweetened corn saucers looked a little smaller to me, but that might just be because my head has grown so much larger since the last time I sat before a gleaming bowl of Quisp. The saucers still catch little puddles of milk, making miniature bowls of cereal inside your spoon. I really appreciate the folks at Quaker remaining faithful to the original version. I'm still a little angry about the face-lift they gave to Cap'n Crunch.
Closer inspection of the box revealed it was made in 2005. No worries, with a half life alone of over 900,000 years, any box of Quisp will remain fresh and crunchy well beyond any of our lifetimes.
You can get a lot of Quisp merchandise at www.quisp.com. There are T-shirts, and a beautiful wristwatch. (If somebody would buy me one of these, I might start showing up on time. My birthday is May 23.)
I kinda get the feeling that this whole Quisp revival might not really be about the cereal, but just a way to promote hip fashions and cool collectibles to ironic "slackers". Maybe I wasn't supposed to even eat the cereal, but devouring that whole box in one sitting really made up for any clever marketing ploy that I may or may not have fallen victim to.
I love you, Quisp! (Quunchy can go screw himself though.)
