I am a "Boomer"... born in a year that also saw the birth of the H-Bomb... My work has always had an imagist aspect; my subjects always representational, if not always realistic. I am intrigued by the ways in which the human mind creates mental pictures through the assimilation of language, both written and spoken, and how this ideo-sensory process can produce wildly differing results from individual to individual... "Quick! Think of a horse! What color is it? Does it have fangs?" Words conjure images and these images can obtain the power/status of symbols. Symbols exist as a basis of human communication on all levels of social structure, from intrapersonal to interpersonal... from family to tribe, from tribe to community and, eventually, all of humanity. They have the capacity to transcend differences in dialects and language. The use of symbol has always been second nature to me and has allowed me to function for years as an editorial illustrator, creating visual interpretations for worded concepts, stories, and articles created by other people. In addition to being an illustrator, I have worked as a computer game developer in the roles of concept artist, storyboard artist, texture artist, and 3D modeler. These positions also required me to convey the concepts of others, but in addition taught me skills that have allowed me to work part-time as an instructor at several colleges in the Chicago vicinity. They have, however, left me wanting more. Ultimately, illustration is more craft than art and I hunger for an intellectual environment in which to explore my own avenues of expression, rather than portray the thought processes and musings of others. I currently work as a creator of sequential art, writing and drawing my own comic books, primarily using images, more than words, to carry a story. I use a process that incorporates traditional and digital media, and I have taken advantage of my proximity to rapid-prototyping printers to generate three-dimensional versions of my characters. My stint as a game developer has instilled in me a deep respect for iterative design when working in studio, following the Credo of Fixed Iteration: 1) concept; 2) design realization; 3) critical analysis; 4) repeat if necessary. I am influenced by the work of Jean "Moebius" Giraud, Vaughn Bode', Enki Bilal, as well as some contemporaries... Geof Darrow, Gary Gianni, Mark Schultz, Mike Mignola, Alex Ross, Doug Klauba... and I hope to add more as I go along. I currently have several properties that I am working on: "Oxbluud" and "Cannonboy". I debuted them at the San Diego Comic-con 2006 and was encouraged (deluded) enough at their reception that I intend to keep at it. "Cannonboy: The Dreams Issue"was premiered at San Diego Comic-con 2007 A short mini-comic, "the BUNGALOW cycle" is now finished. More of a conceptual piece, it is also available through ComixpressAll are currently available through ComiXpress: http://www.comixpress.com I also have a presence on LinkedIn: Kurt Mitchell at LinkedInI am currently working on some personal projects, the writing is done... now I'm illustrating them: "Armadillo Buckaroo""The Ballad of Tex Rex""Tyranno De Bergerac""The Flight of the Hindenblimp"These are being branded as a series entitled "Classic Tales for Classy Kids".and, finally... "The Pigeon Eater"; (see the Gallery to the right...) is currently at the printer. "The Pigeon Eater 2" has been outlined and is being written.

Thanks, Norm... I had a 9mm placed square against my heart, and the life I knew just seemed to vanish in an instant. I'm still alive but the bungalow lifestyle vanished... but it is still there with other players. |
