| Header: | End of May Update | ||
| Bulletin: | Hi folks! I don't know if anyone will be reading this, but I just wanted to give you a quick update on the work I've been doing lately. As any Marvel reader probably knows by now, Ultimates #13 hit the stands, wrapping up my involvement on the book. Yes, there's a massive 8-page gatefold spread in there, which took me three days to color. And yes, I did it on an old G4 with less than 1 GB of RAM. :) Next on the shelf should be Adam in Chromaland from Humanoids, although I think that's only being released in Europe right now. If you happen to be in France in June and it's on the stands, please let me know what you think! I worked my tuckas off on that book. Astonishing X-Men is on hiatus for a couple of months while John Cassaday and I hop over to do an issue of Captain America (I think it's called "Fallen Son"?), then we will be finishing up the third issue of Humanoids' I Am Legion. Don't worry, we'll get back to AXM soon! The big news is that I'm almost done with Thor #1. Oh, you have to see this when it comes out. I'm thoroughly enjoying the coloring process on this artwork. Olivier Coipel and Mark Morales are a great match, and they can move comfortably from sad introspection to an insane fight scene to a sweet, genteel humor, all in the same issue, without breaking stride. They're letting me get away with all kinds of stuff, too, so I'm pulling out the stops on this one. Then there's the upcoming DC work that I'm getting ready to start: Black Lightning with Jen Van Meter and Cully Hamner, and the long-awaited All-Star Wonder Woman with Adam Hughes. It's been a couple of years since I played in the DC sandbox. I wonder if a mostly-female creative team (the editor, writer, and I are all chicks) will affect Black Lightning? It'll be interesting to see, that's for sure. We've already made Cully an honorary girl. :) As for All-Star Wonder Woman, it'll be as epic and iconic as we can possibly do on a comic page. The coloring will be an integral part of the story; Adam and I are relying heavily on Maxfield Parrish for the Paradise Island scenes, but a far more industrial (i.e., gray) color scheme for Man's World. The way I see it, I'm Adam's fourth arm on this project; the only reason that he's not doing the coloring is that he's already doing the writing, pencilling and inking. So I'll approach the colors as if he himself were coloring the book (as much as I can). Right now Adam is writing everything first before he starts drawing, so it'll probably be a while before I start seeing pages. So, you'll be seeing some very different coloring styles from me in the next year. Besides my tried-and-true method on Astonishing, there will be a Drew Struzan/Travis Charest painterly influence on Thor; a flat, animated style on Black Lightning; and an interpretation of Adam's style on Wonder Woman. Not to mention the mishmash of all styles from across the artosphere in Adam in Chromaland. Enjoy! |
