Greetings folks. A comic hack from just before the Image/Valiant boom....recently brought back into the fold thanks to the hippest store in the USofA...Uberbot, right here in Winter Park FL.

What started off as a slow, curious peek at "what's happening now" in comics has transformed back into a habit. I didn't think I'd ever want to read a Marvel comic again, but guys like Bendis and Vaughn have convinced me that there's some decent writing out there. I just finished the 2nd Runaways HC and it really shocked me at the quality of craftsmanship.

I've also been reading Brian Wood's back catalog. After reading DMZ, I had to find out what else this guy has done. AMAZING stuff. If you haven't seen/read Supermarket or any of the Channel Zero stuff, do yourself a favour...

Okay...so day 2 of my new ComicSpace thingie...never was a MySpace guy so I don't know exactly how this type of thing should operate.

Somewhere along the way, my dabbling with Vertigo and Vertigo type stuff has given way to good ol' fashioned superhero comics. Dammit...I've even bought the first two New Avengers trades. AVENGERS!? I haven't liked the Avengers since I was...9. My brother always wanted to be the Vision and I was the Black Panther...which is odd considering I was a suburban white kid and Mick was not...a robot. The point being that, and this is probably a news flash to no one, Bendis and Finch can spin a great yarn about superheroes. Looking at the bookshelves, there is a disarming array of 70s Marvel heroes re-interpreted in the modern era. I was all about the Invisibles and Transmet and then 100 Bullets and Y...but eventually, I read all of them. So, I turned to Wanted...then started looking for other stuff by Millar and Morrison and the like. Turns out, they were doing hero books.

Now, when perusing my shelves, there among the Hellblazer and Preacher and Sandman and Absolute Editions and Dredd are Spider-Woman, New X-Men Omnibus, Runaways, Ultra, Ultimate X-Men, Supreme Power, Punisher....oh yeah...and Daredevil. Dammit...Daredevil...the one that really started this slide.

Happy 2 weeks ComicSpace.

Now is the time to show a little love to Virgin Comics. Since I've gotten back on the comics wagon, I have bought, almost exclusively, HC collections and the occasional TPB. Until they put 100 Bullets, Y and Hellblazer in the HCs they deserve, I'll be stuck with the TPBs...ah, some day, the Absolute Editions of Invisibles, Transmet and Preacher will be out there....but I digress.

Their are only 2 boooks I get monthly now: DMZ & The Evening News. Those two are just too topical to wait 6 months for. However, I binged one day a couple of months ago and picked up all the Virgin titles I could find. I'd been reading about them, saw preview art on the website and thought I'd check it out.

Virgin comics is going to be a force. From their initial offering, all the books appear to be strong. Ramayan and Devi, in particular, have beautiful art and storylines that are intriguing. Part of this may be solely to my lack of knowledge of Indian myth, but who cares! Snakewoman is Gaydos, so you know it's going to be good. Everything about the Virgin line has been impressive, right down to the quality of paper they use and the glossy coating on the books. I always think my fingers will be greasy from touching them, they're that nice.

The key thing, though, is that they stories are coherent, the art work is fabulous, and each issue leaves that desire for the rest of the story. This isn't a startup the way Image got going...all flash, no substance. Or Valiant, painfully interwoven, limited quantities for fake demand. This is just flat out great work.

7 Brothers, the first of the Director's Cut line, is off to a very interesting start as well. I am curious to see what Guy Ritchie's offering will look like. I am one of those who got a Russian mafia copy of Revolver and I LOVED it. I think his Gamekeeper could be very interesting. Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame is bringing something to the party soon as well. I can't wait!

So that's it for today. The message is: if you have to buy weekly books, step out of your comfort zone and try something from Virgin.

Hey Matt -- Yeah, the RNC may be clueless about everything else, but they really know their undead romance comix!
