You Don't Know Jack

6'1" 220lbs lt.brwn.buzz ... Whoops! Wrong Profile Site!

OK, for real, about me and my comics-related life (and some other stuff, too). I thought I'd walk through the tags I selected for myself and talk about why I made those choices.

action figures:
Let's get one thing perfectly clear here: I am NOT one of those guys who buys up action figures as soon as they come out and then never opens them, hoping to keep them in pristine condition for later sale. No, no, no, I love action figures plain and simple; in particular, the DC Direct line. In fact, I have about 250 from DC Direct, and each and every one is out of the box and on proud display. I even let my nieces and nephews (more on THEM later) play with them from time-to-time (under the proper supervision, of course). My absolute favorites tend to be the female figures, although I had absolutely no tendency to play with Barbie as a young boy. My top three at the moment are Zatanna (Identity Crisis), Power Girl (Infinite Crisis) and The Huntress (Batman: Hush)--Oh, and Armored Wonder Woman (Kingdom Come).

aspiring retailer:
This one's pretty cut-and-dry. My dream career is to be a hustling and bustling comic shop owner--with a twist. My partner (maybe not quite what you think, in terms of defining "partner," and maybe even more) and I are putting together a business plan for a concept store that, to my knowledge, doesn't exist elsewhere. That's all I want to say about that ... for now.

comics/dc comics/fan/reader:
I was first introduced to comics by the DC Universe, and it remains the core of my interest in the medium to this day (approximately 30-years later). That isn't to say that I haven't expanded my horizons, particularly within the past decade or so. I now read around 100 titles per month and there are selections from Marvel, WildStorm, Vertigo, Dark Horse, Image and Dynamite, in addition to my DCU mainstays. The word "read" in the previous sentence is important because I'm MUCH, MUCH more into story than I am art. I've dabbled in quite a bit of amateur-level writing myself, some of it gaining quite positive recognition and even a few minor awards. So, naturally, with comics too, the writing is my thing--rather, what floats my boat.

gay:
It seems that there are a great many of us gay people interested in comics and the like. My partner of 3 1/2 years is every bit obsessed as I am (perhaps even more so). Of course, we're trying to get all of our nephews turned on to comics (for some reason, the nieces just aren't interested), and so far it's working well. We're basically feeding four or five comics habits for the price of one, since we just buy one copy of everything and then share around.

Good luck with opening up a comics shop! As a former retailer, I can tell you it's an extremely daunting but ultimately rewarding experience. I'm quite happy I did it. Like everyone else, I'm curious to see what your "twist" is. We can definitely use more good shops out there!

Can't wait to hear what the twist is.

Too bad you're attached! =p

So, I noticed you added other shtuff. I'm glad to see another DCD opener. It would make me nuts to get all these figures and not play with them. Part of what I like about the DCD figures is the idea I can recreate the COIE on my living room floor.

I'm not sure whether to be flattered by, or run screaming from, this comment. Either way, thanks for stopping by!

Thanks, Daley-Man. I never get tired of hearing that, especially on the verge of my 37th birthday (UGH).

Hello, Jack. Thanks for including me on your list of friends here. By any chance, did you live in Houston at one time?

I still do live in Houston, Joe (well, the Friendswood/Clear Lake area, anyway). Good to see you again after all these years.

Oh, cool. Thanks for asking me to be a friend. It's also my dream to be a comic book retailer as well. Anyway, thanks again!
