Oprah: Crazy Idiot or Deliberate Scumbag?

This article in Salon best describes my thoughts about Oprah, her holier-than-thou demeanor, and the scent of Noblesse Oblige that she gives off:

The article is about her most recent Book Of Crap that she's plugging, "The Secret." Anyone who reads that article and still thinks Oprah's great is H.I.G.H.

The "secret" behind "The Secret" is that it's just another watering-down of the pseudo-scientific principles and teachings of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, the Father of all self-help lies which was created by a cult in the 1970's, and popularized by Anthony Robbins and plethora of goons like him in the 1980's.

There's no way on Earth the people around Oprah should have allowed her to plug this book. SOMEONE should have said "uh, Jesus not only wasn't a millionaire, but he said it was easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a sewing needle than it is for a rich man to get into Heaven." Or "yeah, scientists know exactly how electricity works... that why the fucking switches on the walls of your palatial mansion send electricity to your diamond-encrusted chandeliers... they are not magical buttons that summon light from Heaven!"

The fact that Oprah doesn't have a staff of people around her capable of saying "NO!" when shit like "The Secret" or James Frey's book comes along means that she has deliberately chosen to surround herself with Yes-Men and simpletons. Frey's book had been roundly criticized prior to the revelation of his lying about his jail time and addiction, because it told addicts that all they have to do is just say "NO THANKS!" to drugs and -ding- they could kick their habits, just like that.

Meanwhile, over here in the real world, all recent brain research shows that drug addicts have areas in their brains that pump out pain sensations unless dosed with their craved drugs FOR UP TO SEVEN YEARS AFTER STOPPING THEIR DRUG ADDICTIONS. Eleven, if you're a smoker.

But never mind that... Oprah's a sucker who never met a sob story she didn't embrace. Frey was actively lying about having been addicted to drugs,and tons of drug researchers and addiction therapists had BLASTED his book for his false portrayals of drug addiction clinics, had questioned his claim to have been addicted to heroin and kicked the habit without help, etc. etc. etc. Still, despite an army of medical professionals out there claiming that this book was capital-F Fucked, Oprah jumped on board and flogged the holy living hell out of it because it offered a simplistic self-empowerment message about getting off of drugs... that you could do it with a mere snap of your fingers, and that if you didn't, you must be a lazy or bad person.

It was only after Frey got busted for lying about having been arrested & doing time & everything else that she backed away from the book, and even THEN, the most she could manage was that HE was a bad person for lying, but that his book still holds a great message for people addicted to drugs.

HOW COULD IT?!?

If you see a loved one reading her newest recommended Book Of Bullshit, smack them hard across the face and remind them that Moses wasn't a millionaire and that scientists know exactly how electricity works.
