Writer of comic book Metro Med, the hospital for superheroes, which I started with frequent collaborator Phil Meadows. We won the first Small Press Idol for our submission. Currently, the book is in transition to a new art team and publisher, but issue #0 is available.

(Yes, I'm reviewing new artists and will be looking at portfolios at MicroCon as well as online.)

I edited and contributed a sci-fi story to Fanzing's first comic book, Job Wanted. Got a lot of favorable reviews for a short story, "Melvin and Marvin Middler, Time Meddlers" which ran in Shooting Star Comics Anthology #4. All of these comic books are available at my site where I'm selling my collection: Too Many Longboxes.com

I was the editor, webmaster and head writer for Fanzing, the Unofficial Online DC Comics Fan Magazine, from 1997-2003, when I ended the monthly magazine to concentrate on an actual comic book writer career. Had the privilege during that time to work with dozens of very talented individuals, many of whom have gone on to work in the industry or explore their art in other formats. In 2003 I also launched the group newsblog "Monitor Duty", offering newslinks and commentary about comic books, movies and other geek stuff. (I'm always looking for contributors.)

INFLUENCES and FAVORITES
Chuck Dixon, Scott Beatty and Beau Smith have taught me a lot about not bogging a comic down in talking heads (as the writer of a medical drama comic book, that's important). Gail Simone and Tony Bedard have yet to write anything that didn't rock. Geoff Johns, Mark Waid and James Robinson are hands-down the best of the talking head writers and, for the most part, the best influences at DC Comics. When it comes to humor comics I enjoy Phil Foglio, Scott Shaw!, Aaron Williams, Scott Kurtz, John Kovalic and Keith Giffen.

The late Julius Schwartz taught me everything about selling a comic book; I wish I were making comics that would sit in a wire rack at a drugstore so that it was still useful!

I hold the following legends in high esteem, and I can only hope I've learned from them all: Schwartz, Carl Barks, Jim Aparo, Will Eisner, Joe Staton, Kurt Busiek.

CURRENTLY BUYING
PS238, Uptown Girl trades, Birds of Prey, Green Lantern Corps, Astro City, PvP, Dork Tower trades, Rush, Y: The Last Man trades, Jonah Hex trades, 52, JLA, JSA, Green Lantern.

PERSONAL
Currently my time is consumed with my work as a freelance webmaster and web designer, including managing Scott Beatty's web site when I can. I'm studying Flash animation in my nonexistent spare time.

I was also the world's biggest devotee of Elongated Man...ran the only web site dedicated to him, Dibny Dirt)... and always wanted to pitch Elongated Man to DC, until they killed off Sue. I know, they're trying to bring her back, but the bloom is off the rose. Now Ralph is a somber, selfish, drunk jerk. (Hey. Remember when comics were FUN? I do. Mine are.)

I'm happily married to my tolerant wife, Melinda. We have four cats (well, three and a loaner from my retired globe trotting parents). My brother, Staff Sgt. Andy Hutchison of an AWACS unit stationed in OKC, will be appearing in the upcoming Transformers movie.

I regularly donate a box of comic books to Operation Gratitude for inclusion in care packages to our military personnel overseas, and I'd like to encourage all of you to do the same. Have a comic book that you overprinted? Perhaps a long box or short box at your comic shop that you could let go? It not only provides entertainment for our troops, but I've heard many tales of soldiers giving goodies from their packages to Iraqi children in exchange for tips on the enemy or the location of an I.E.D. Maybe the comic book you donate will end up saving a life! You never know. Please consider donating. You can drop off contributions at participating Jeep dealerships; see the web site for details.

CONVENTION PLANS FOR 2007:
I plan to attend MicroCon and FallCon in Minnesota. (BEST CONS EVER! You should go, if you haven't.)
I will be at Wizard World-Chicago on Saturday. Would you like a FREE COMIC? See my bulletin!

Jim, it's not til April 29th! That's 8 days from now. A week from Sunday!

Maybe I'll see you there?

ARRRRRRGHH!
Can't make it as I'm currently under a killer deadline. Must be how I screwed up what date is was, a case of tunnel vision.

Enjoyed the bio comment,
"I'm studying Flash animation in my nonexistent spare time."
Here's to nonexistent spare time.
Prost!

Thanks, man!
And I love the look of your WWII project. When it's time to promote it, you contact me and I'll give you some buzz on my blog.

Will you be at MicroCon?

Depends on my deadlines, but I'd like to.
Moved to Minnesota last summer and made it to Fall-Con. Am I correct in assuming Micro-Con is the same set-up but scaled back to one day?

Remove[ Posted by Michael_Hutchison on Mar 8th, 2007 12:21 PM ]...

MicroCon is one day, yes. Check out www.mncba.com for the details. They've already sent out invitations for the attendees (it's a limited list due to the limited space) but contact them and get on their mailing list.

The head is Nick Post (short for Postigliano, I believe) of "The Source" (comic shop in Roseville/Falcon Heights, just north of the fairgrounds), the friendliest and most supportive guy in comics. Get on his good side, because he's a great person to have as a friend and will help you when it's time to get your book in stores. If you're a Minnesotan (immigrant, at least) with a book coming out, he needs to know about it. You can call the Source on weekdays and ask to talk to him.

Thank you!
I'll be posting some preview pages from it and from my other stories. I really have to get going on my artist hunt in the next two months.

When is MicroCon? I'd love to go, if nothing else to get some face time with the local (MN) talent! Is there still time left to get a booth/table? I'd love to get the chance to sit down with you and talk shop, I caught a glimpse of your new project and can't wait to get myself a copy!

MNCBA (they're on ComicSpace too) has all the info:
http://www.mncba.com/
You can contact them there. It's run by Nick Postigliano (aka Nick Post) and he'd be the one to talk to. I should warn you, MicroCon has fewer guests, usually, because it's pressed for space.
Definitely catch me there! I'd like to talk with you about your self-publishing efforts.

[ Posted by takisoma on Feb 21st, 2007 12:05 AM ]...

yep yep. got my invite too.

and you are the first one to figure out the names without being told!!!!

Eden Valley is actually a town in Minnesota near Bimidji. I thought about naming her Eden Prairie, but I thought that would've been too obvious. yeah? woo hoo HIGH-FIVE for figuring it out.

Hey, Hutchy-poo. Welcome to the neighborhood.

[ Posted by KurtBelcher on Feb 20th, 2007 7:04 PM ]...

Yeah, I didn't even have any idea you were here until you friended me. But there're so many great people here already, I should've guessed... :)

I actually still have a few issues of "Job Wanted". I can't afford to buy any more at the moment, but I will down the road.

If you ever need someone to draw something for you, check out my latest art and let me know. It would most likely be reserved to shorter subjects right now, because of the mini-series projects I'm currently working on. I'd love to work with you, and to make up for my disastrous non-showing on that Fanzing Superman story back in the day.

Later!

I wondered why you hadn't added me. Glad to see you did.

Need any more issues of "Job Wanted"? It's probably about time I asked all the JW contributors if they need any more copies.

You, sir, are a good influence. (File that under "Things Beau Smith never thought he'd read")
