From humble beginnings, NBM has grown to become the second largest indie comics press.

Founded in 1976 by publisher Terry Nantier while still studying at Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Communications, NBM (at the time, Flying Buttress Publications) was among the very first to bring the concept of graphic novels over to these shores. It started by publishing Europeans such as Enki Bilal. Struggling Flying Buttress was way ahead of its time. It took until the mid-eighties for the company to take off with such series as The Mercenary and Corto Maltese. It also developed a great name for itself in classic reprints by proving, in the early eighties, there was an audience ready to pay for library-worthy volumes of Terry and the Pirates.

Ironically considered an 'alternative' publisher in comics simply because it does not publish superheroes, NBM is in fact a general interest publisher in its field. Uninterested in "niches", outre margins or otherwise alienated side voices which appeal to just as narrow an audience of fans as superheroes, NBM has always sought as wide an audience as any good novel or movie may reach. Its editorial choices are always motivated by that one single goal. In this, it takes its cue from the large and well-respected European comics scene. NBM pioneered general bookstore distribution as early as 1980. In 1986, it was the first comics pub to get a distributor when it signed with Publishers Group West. In 1988, it took over its own distribution and became the first to distribute Dark Horse graphic novels into that market. NBM's books are now available in a wide array of different retailing organizations. As a result, NBM continues to grow and attract big names. It also attracts way more than its fair share of press and media acclaim for its widely recognized very high level of quality. Whether in ComicsLit, its showcase literary imprint, or in mass appeal horror & SF, NBM never compromises its very high standards.

NBM’S EISNER NOMINEES!
Trondheim, De Crecy Named for “Graphic Novel Oscars”

NBM Publishing congratulates graphic novelists Lewis Trondheim and Nicolas De Crecy for their nominations in the annual Eisner Awards. Trondheim, writer-artist of the dark comedy Mr. I and co-writer (with Joann Sfar) of the popular series Dungeon, is a nominee for Best Writer/Artist — Humor. The category of Best Painter/Multimedia Artist (Interior Art) includes writer-artist De Crecy for his work on Glacial Period, the first graphic novel sponsored by the Louvre Museum.

De Crecy’s Glacial Period was born after artist the artist felt overwhelmed before t he Louvre’s rich art collection. The result is a story set thousands of years hence in a glacial period where human history has been forgotten. Some archeologists fall upon the Louvre, buried in age-old snow. They cannot begin to explain the artifacts that they find. Their interpretations are nonsensical, absurd, and farcical.

Trondheim is a leader in a new and exciting movement, “La Nouvelle Generation” or “Nouvelle Vague.” This group of French cartoonists focuses on vulnerable characters in impossible situations. Mr. I features a humble stick figure who, no matter what he tries, always ends up killed; each page is a miniature story that starts placidly— Mr. I goes ice fishing, Mr. I uses a vending machine — but leads to a fate fit for Wile E. Coyote. Dungeon mixes suspense, adventure, and laughs in a castle filled with monsters; Marvin the Vegetarian Dragon and his self-centered pal Herbert the Duck must defend Dungeon, whether they want to or not.

The Eisners have often honored NBM publications. In 2006, for instance, the Dungeon volume The Early Years and Manu Larcenet’s Ordinary Victories received nominations as Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material.

Other NBM-related nominees for 2007 include:
• Rick Geary (NBM’s A Treasury of Victorian Murder) in the Best New Series and Best Publication for a Younger Audience categories for Gumby
• Trondheim’s Dungeon co-writer Joann Sfar as Best Writer/Artist for Klezmer and Vampire Loves
• and Stefano Gaudiano — translator of NBM’s No Pasaran! by Vittorio Giardino and many other NBM books — for Daredevil (Best Continuing Series)

The Eisners, established in 1987, are the most prestigious awards in comic books and graphic novels. Named for master comics maker Will Eisner, the nominees pass through a strict judging process. “The finalists on the ballot are selected by a blue-ribbon committee that considers thousands of entries submitted by publishers and creators,” says the awards’ website. “The nominees are then voted on by all parts of the comic book industry.” The awards ceremony will take place on the evening of July 27 during Comic-Con International: San Diego, North America’s largest comic-book and pop-culture event.

NBM’S BLUESMAN OPTIONED FOR FILM
Producer of Nicolas Cage Thriller Takes on Bestselling Graphic Novel;
Music by Grammy Winner Keb’ Mo’

Producers Jason Koornick and Lawrence Blume have optioned Bluesman, a bestselling graphic novel from writer Rob Vollmar, artist Pablo Callejo, and publisher NBM. Koornick’s producing credits include Revolution Studios’ upcoming thriller Next, starring Nicolas Cage and Julianne Moore, while Blume’s award-winning feature film Martin & Orloff led The Hollywood Reporter to name him one of the “Ten Rising Stars of Comedy.”

Grammy-winning blues artist Keb’ Mo’ is attached to produce the movie’s soundtrack and to act in a supporting role. A modern musician with southern roots, the Epic Records singer-guitarist has won three Grammys for Best Contemporary Blues Album and sold more than two million records. His latest album, Suitcase, has been nominated for a Grammy in 2007.

Bluesman plunges traveling musicians Lem and Ironwood into Deep South juke joints of the 1920s. When Ironwood tries to stop a white man from attacking his black mistress, all three end up dead. Lem, the sole survivor, finds a rabidly racist posse chasing him throughout the South. The story’s conclusion presents an unexpected, remarkably dramatic twist.

“When I first read Bluesman, I was struck by Rob and Pablo’s ability to convey the emotion of America’s homegrown music in a compelling narrative story,” Koornick says. “Lem’s journey is both archetypal and totally original. I’m excited to produce a film that is worthy of Rob and Pablo’s fine work.”

The Los Angeles Times says of Bluesman, “There's enough suspense and atmosphere here to make anyone grip their chair and feel transported. The plot is full of unexpected twists as well as kindness among the outcasts. Lem and Ironwood only have each other. And they make the most of it.” “Writer Rob Vollmar imagines a place rich in meaning and menace; Pablo G. Callejo's expressive B&W images give it vibrancy," says Entertainment Weekly.

Koornick is the Executive Producer of the feature film Next, which is based on a short story by sci-fi author Philip K. Dick and will likely be released nationally in spring 2007. He has numerous projects in development through his company Eye In The Sky Entertainment. Koornick also has experience in the music business as the producer of the top-selling documentary Hitting the High Notes: 2004 High Sierra Music Festival, released on DVD through CMH Records in 2005. He has produced scores of roots music albums including artist releases, tributes and compilations.

Vollmar is a comics retailer in Oklahoma. Callejo lives in Spain. Bluesman is three 80-page, 7” by 10” trade-paperback volumes at $8.95 apiece, published November 2006. Vol. 1 ISBN 0-9742468-3-2; vol. 2 ISBN 1-56163-456-5; vol. 3 ISBN 1-56163-476-X.
