Hello All. I'm Neil Chenier, an aspiring comic book illustrator. I'm new to comic space and still getting all my info and art in order,but I should be all set up soon.
Let me fill you in on who I am and what I do. I feel like I've wasted this last 8 or 9 months working a couple of jobs that have kept me from persuing my dream of being a comic book illustrator and have made the decision of going back to serving at a restaurant which pays the bills but gives me the time to draw until I get that elusive contract I'm after.
My education in art includes 3 years of life drawing, design, illustration, painting and a year of sculpture at the Art Symposium here in Winnipeg under the tutelage of an amazing teacher, Wayne Bruckner. I've also taken a few correspondent courses of Joe Kuberts world of cartooning, which I would recommend to any aspiring artist wanting to get into comics. Last and least, I've taken 3 years of advertising art at Technical Vocational school where I learned a few things, including the fact that advertising art is not the career I want.
I decided that this year I'm going to as many conventions as I can to meet as many editors and professionals as I can. In 2008 I've done the Manitoba con, Edmonton con and the Calgary Con which hav been really good for getting the constructive criticism and contacts that I'm looking for. I'll be heading down to Wizard World Chicago, the Sandiego Con and finishing off the summer here at the Manitoba comic con. I'll keep you posted on my travels, contacts and criticisms.

Well I sent out 48 portfolio packets to various editors at Marvel, DC and Darkhorse and got 1 reply back from DC, 1 Reply from Wildstorm, and a generic reply from Darkhorse that had some useful information. The two from DC/Wildstorm were nice, basically said the same thing "I'm on the right track/ Well on my way, a lot of the stuff is nice but need to work on a few things" and asked me to send them some more stuff down the road. So I wanted to get some commissions out of the way, then I was going to get back to doing some sequentials. |

I was at the big show in Calgary at the end of April; didn't make the trade show in Edmonton the week before that because I attended the NYCC. If you get a chance you should try to make it to Pure Spec (http://www.purespec.org/) in Edmonton in October -- previous years have featured a lot of great comics-centred programming. |
