Quasi-bio: Has worked innumerable useless jobs (techie crap, mixing drinks, ad work, et al.) and is currently (still) supplementing his writerly ambitions with more clerk-work.
Is a fast reader (220 pg. novel in 3 hours), but a slow writer (there ya go, it evens out).
Older than he looks, but younger than he feels.
A typical product of the post-Watergate era, is about as anti-authoritarian as you can get on a limited budget.
Is very glad that "Michael Murphy" is as close to a pseudonymous name as it gets; although certain college-era bullies may have already forgotten about the incident with the reversible vacuum cleaner (with the baby powder in it), or getting barricaded in their dorm rooms on a four day weekend, or that other time that I... well, anyway, Mike's just glad there's a lot of guys with his exact same name.
Last notable work: Co-writing Jade Fire and Barbarossa & the Lost Pirates with friend Brian Augustyn for Kandora Entertainment before said publisher went belly up without paying or giving proper credits (sigh). I also worked with fellow Comicspacer Steve Sanchez on two different issues of a certain Image comic.
Re Comics - Childhood faves: Spidey (when there was only 3 books to buy a month), Thor, FF, Warlock, Conan, Omega the Unknown, Pogo, Englehart & Rogers' Detective run, John Byrne's Charlton work, anything by Kirby, Carl Barks, or Neal Adams.
Teenage faves: Nexus, Miracleman, Uncanny X-Men (pre-1987), Elsewhere Prince (anything by Eric Shanower or Moebius basically), Valerian, Corto Maltese
Current faves: Finder, Sillage by Morvan & Buchet, Casanova, Fear Agent, Wake (Morvan & Buchet), Alan Moore's ABC work, anything by Matt Howarth, and Don Rosa's work in general.
Published work that I don't mind people knowing I did :
GI JOE Battle Files #2 (the satiric "Join Cobra" brochure done with Eric Wolfe Hanson)
Barbarossa & the Lost Corsairs #2 (uncredited by the publishers on the credits)
*Made some additional notations to the archived projects in the Galleries as a few people weren't paying attention to the text identifying Sheldon as the artist and not myself :P

Hulk submission
My friend Sheldon wanted to submit samples to the Hulk editor so I wrote a nearly wordless script for him related to the "Planet Hulk" event.

Dragonbane
Another comic project (sans lettering this time) by Sheldon & myself. We were playing around with high fantasy stereotypes (or rather would have gotten around to it)...

This a great pic that my friend Eric Yong (who should join) drew up after I sent him a page's worth of off-color Bucky jokes....

<<<Ok, so anyone else we both know on the site? (Not know of, but actually know :)>>
I dunno, you can use the search feature to look for specific folks.
Many of the people on my list are folks who I've met or talked to maybe just a few times, but not a lot of people who'd loan me money or drive me to the airport. =)
The rest have friended me for one reason or another, or if I friended them, it's because I checked out their page and really liked what I saw. There's some really incredible talent spread over this site. Many are people I hadn't previously heard of, so it's been pretty enlightening. Particularly cool is the large number of awesomely talented female artists on here....that's just great to see. Maybe the comicbook industry sausage party is slowly....um...de-sausagifying.
All these great artist are kind of inspiring at first...makes me want to draw. But then I usually just get depressed at how shit my work is compared to theirs and I just go in the kitchen and eat my feelings (beer is technically food).
So just look around, and if you see folks you like, friend them and maybe you'll get to know them. |
