I absolutely loved "Chronos" when it was coming out.
And wow, this is the first I'm seeing of "Boilerplate," but it's fantastic! Damn. 1 Reply [ Latest posted on January 8th, 2007 10:30 PM ]

Hey Michael -- doing great man! I've been keeping fairly busy but I'm about to get very busy (which I'm looking forward to!). A back-story issue of Rex Mundi coming up with Arvid & DH, and I'm doing art for a book of short stories (non-comic stuff) that will be getting pitched very soon. Like my little bio stuff says on this site, I'm really liking '07 so far!
How're YOU doing man? Looks like you're busy as hell, yes?
Later! Jim |

Yeah, this is week-from-Hell when it comes to the day job. I'm working on a short story collection of my own, actually (or obviously, if you've scanned my CS page here...) - I've been shying away from trying comics stuff for the last year, and it's been pretty fulfilling. Not agonizing over trying to find an artist seems to help, too! ;) But lately I've been getting that bug again, so who knows.
Your stuff's as gorgeous as ever, of course - but keep me up to date on that prose collection, man, I'm very interested! |

Hey thanks for the art compliments! As to the short story collection, it's possible that I may know something in the next month or two (but these things seem to always take longer than I expect! :) Hey, I'd LOVE to pick up some of your writings -- lemme know where I can find some & I'll be sure to get it. Congrats on all of your work and keep on cranking man!

Ah-hahaha. No, for now the only place to get my work is via e-mail, by asking me. I'm not there, yet.
I was there twice, when it came to comics; once the deal fell through and the other time I broke it off. With prose, I've been waiting until the book is finished and free from my heart before I put myself through the pitching process. I don't have the friends in the business like I've had with comics, either.
I'm working on 21-25 out of 32 as we speak, and when I get there I'll make the tour by mail, like they did in the olden days.
I used to keep a website with all of my work on it, but this project has been very personal, and I haven't done that. The only public samples have been whatever I have posted on my CS page from week to week. Right now, it's one significant fragment from the first story in the collection. I might change it up later.
I appreciate the vote of confidence, though. It always feels weird when people assume that I've been published already. |

Are you going to mail out to literary agents first? From what I've heard for short stories and novels, that is often the best first step (though not ALways necessary). Whatever you end up doing for submitting, I wish you lots of luck man! One great thing to consider is attending conferences for writers. Much like attending comic cons is SO helpful, writing conferences are a great opportunity to meet editors, publishers, AND literary agents. Ah, but maybe you're already doing all that so I'll just shut my trap! :)
Best, Jim |

Thanks a lot! I'm still a little weirded out by the way those stories turned out; they came froma dumb thought I had while sitting at a stoplight on a bike, and pretty much every freelance job I've ever gotten has come through there. Weird.
What're you reading these days? |
 |
[ Posted by patchworkearth on Jan 5th, 2007 10:25 AM ]...
It's been my very limited experience that, really, that's how it almost always works out.
Aside from what you mentioned? In comics I'm reading Gillen/McKelvie's "Phonogram," I'm reading "Kabuki" and "Finder," and I was overjoyed to see that Dylan Horrocks's "Atlas" had finally released its third issue.
And, of course, Scott Pilgrim.
Lately I've been reading far more prose, because that's where my head's been. |

Thank you, sir, for saving Transformers. It's a bit of a hot potato, isn't it? And as beloved as it is by its own fanbase, as a whole the property is viewed rather poorly sometimes, I think, by the community at large.
I can see why. Two sides of a deep-seated religious conflict (one that often obscures its baser motives, like for energy resources) that has been going on since nearly the beginning of recorded history, so long that each subsequent generation knows nothing BUT conflict... Soldiers, literal machines created for killing yet who long for peace... The problem is, the story has no relevance to our generation. |

THanks man, nothing going on now, just schooool. Im literally there at school day and night, 12-14 hours a day 7 days a week during the term. No free time for other stuff. DOne a bit of freelance stuff but i cant show any due to NDA's. Nothing amazing though, just some stuff to pay bills. This upcoming term is a bit lighter but Im interviewing for an internship at a film studio so I'll be just as busy if that pans out.
Thanks for checking out my work! |

Hey, thanks for the add - I looked through both your portfolio and your comic, there's some really nice work there. I particularly respect that you present your ability to draw, you know, more than one kind of thing. Do you ever do comic work in the illustrative style of some of the pieces in the portfolio, or do you adhere to the "Disney/Manga" stuff? 2 Replies [ Latest posted on December 31st, 2006 11:18 PM ]

I don't have any more story samples available at the moment, but I could do a comic or children's story in whatever fashion someone wanted to commission me for, whether that be realistic (Watership Down, maybe?) or uber cartoony (The Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy?). I'm fastest at what I do the most of, but in theory at least, I can do anything. |

We're currently wrapping up our unfinished 24 hour comic (cowritten with Richard Carbonneau - CS name rscarbonneau - and "Cisco Kid" writer Len Kody - CS name lenkody).
It was a magical artifact designed as a continuous cave wall (with the space between pages 1 and 24 as the cave "entrance") that tells a circular story of a cavewoman who learns to create art through magic. There is a series of mandalas on the cave wall, one per page, that establishes a language through sigils that tells the story in microcosm. |
