i started reading comics in 1971, when when i was 6. my family moved from fort lauderdale, fla., to kentucky, and my parents bought me three comics to read on the trip. yes, three. i read them over and over, and i was hooked. i can't remember the books they bought, but i swear one of them was a horror title about a swamp monster.
in the 1970s, i was a voracious reader and collector. my favorite titles were "howard the duck," "uncanny x-men" (the reprints), "superboy and the legion of super-heroes," "plop," "house of mystery" and the other DC horror titles. i also read "creepy" and "vampirella" occasionally. but as a kid, i read only the word balloons, not the narration. so i missed quite a bit in the Warren titles. i got out of comics when the big teen titans/x-men crossover came out. cover price was $2, and that was too much for me. i remember plucking it off the rack at the grocery store, putting it back in disgust and going cold turkey on the spot. fast-forward to the early 1990s: two guys i worked with were avid comics readers. they showed me a Previews catalog, and they explained how much things had changed. i was dazzled by the catalog. the advances in art, paper quality, colors, characters and variety were stunning, easily enough to justify spending $3 per issue. so i was back on the wagon. now i collect original comic art, too. check out my gallery here: http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=125 |
