On it!!!! If you could do a few DVDs or Videos for students detailing how you got started and maintain your work ethic, techniques, and service to clients along with truth to the characters you illustrate. A combination of art samples and interviews. I still use the one I did with you at last year's ECBACC. I am surrounded by gifted students daily who are very nervous about how to procede or are pressured by other forces to not follow this path. While you exist as living viable proof that being talented, hard working, creative, and a nice guy pays off. It would be better for them than "How to Draw the Marvel Way" with Stan Lee.

I just showed a few students in my high school Graphic Design class samples of your work. Last week they were having a passionate argument about Nightwing. So I thought I would give them a little motivation by visiting your site and doing a search on you. It was really a cool learning experience for them. The detail and academic accuracy you put in your illustration work reinforced the need for excellence and storytelling for them.

"Indie" as in independently publihed and not part of a major publishing concern like Marvel, Kondasha, or Image. "Alternative" as in dealing with styles and concepts that may not be routinely served in the mainstream on a regular basis, like typical superheroes, manga, or sci-fi. Even tho' concepts may be deriviative, htis opens up that range of emerging and underserved material to a broader potential fan base.

Sounds good.

But I curious. Is there such a thing as a non-indie alternative anything?

Isn't indie=alternative? It like saying "I quickly go fast"

The Future-Funk indie-alt 'zine is coming!

[ Posted by Punkin1 to JohnJennings on Jan 19th, 2007 1:05 PM ]...

Yo' J: I am rollin' out with the Future Funk indie-alt zine next month. It is mostly a reprint with a few contributions. Could you get me 4 pages B&W of your stuff, contact info, plus the ad for the OH! exhibition to be included. The ad can be in color and will be on the rear outside cover. It will be via www.comixpress.com. The 2nd issue will be a James Brown tribute themed indie-alt pricing guide issue with a lotta retro-futuro-funk in it.

You are so rite. Teaching and reaching keeps you so fresh. Alive like "the monster". Art teachers tend to still practice the subject as craft. You bring to them your insights from being a real artist. I think of self publishing as simply publishing. Marvel self publishes?
Once you put a product out there it competes with all other products while adding to the growth of our industry. You become a publisher with all of the rights, fun, and funk that goes with it.

I checked out your samples. SMOKIN'! A great blend of taste, skill, fun, and concept. Keep it coming.

Thanks for the comment and adding me to your friends. Always good to connect with more comics folks from Chicago. As for teaching, I'm mostly freelance, doing how-to comics sessions at local libraries and talking to librarians about GNs. I've also done some work with jr. high ESL classes. The work's not as steady as I'd like, but it's cool when I do get a call. And getting paid to talk about comics is a plus. I'm going to be laid-up the week of your show. I might be stir-crazy enough by Friday to venture out, but it's a longshot. If I can't make it, let me know how it goes. Good luck! bjw
