Bulletin: Introducing the new Google site/e-zine The Comics Decoder, which is dedicated to bringing some intellectual analysis and revisionist thought back to comics and cartooning:

Each edition will feature essays, reviews and interviews, as well as a selection of comic strips and cartoons in the ‘Funnies’ section of the homepage. The site is only in its inchoate stage; Mr. Watkins doesn't want each edition to be so dominated by his analysis as what the first one is, so please send submissions, queries and suggestions to nocturnaliris@nf.sympatico.ca.

The first edition features comics by Kurt Beaulieu, Dennis Hyer, Mike White and R. W. Watkins. It features essays and reviews by Watkins, Joe Griffin, Ben Rockwood and Geoff Huth.

So far, the item causing the most eyes and mouths to drop open is ‘Webs in Lynch's Closet?’, Watkins's examination of the uncanny similarities between David's Lynch's 1986 film Blue Velvet and the early issues of Amazing Spider-Man:

In his essay ‘Of Definition and Repetition’, Watkins also points out some overlooked flaws (and their potential repercussions) in Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics:

This site has the potential to go places. Come on, check it out! Get involved!
