My comic strip The Rainbow Orchid

About me...

I work as an illustrator and writer and have been making comics since I was a wee chap. I started King Rat Press in 1988 with the anthology Cosmorama, which included contributors such as Warren Ellis, Steve Pugh, David Wyatt, Paul H. Birch and Sara Russell. In 1994 my adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest was published.

I am currently writing and drawing The Rainbow Orchid which will be published by Egmont UK in three parts, Charlie Jefferson and the Tomb of Nazaleod for The DFC, and various bits of illustration work and design in between the gaps.

See my work site.

Favourite comics and creators

Asterix, Blake & Mortimer, Tintin, Lewis Trondheim (Donjon), Bryan Talbot, Jason, Hugo Pratt, Charley's War, Yves Chaland, Nausicaa (Miyazaki), Alan Moore, Oor Wullie, Posy Simmonds, Richard Corben, Teen Titans (60s and 80s), Winsor McCay...

Rainbow Orchid - some reviews...

“This is a spectacular work... the art is wonderfully attractive but what impressed me the most was the slow-burning, exquisitely constructed plot.”
- Comics International #166

“...major talent Garen Ewing captures the spirit of classic Tintin, but provides a deeper story with broader influences and a memorable cast. Supremely realised...”
- Comics International #171

“...meticulously scripted and drawn... simply stunning.”
- Comic Expo 2005 Official Souvenir Magazine

“...the story is a thoroughly charming slice of nostalgia-tinged British adventurism. The dialogue sparkles, a mix of equal parts Boys Own romp, literary and mythological allusion and surprisingly well-researched botany. The characters are vibrant and thoroughly likeable... his art is a fluid blend of intricately observed detail and perfect, pared-down cartooning.”
- Unified Review Theory

“Ewing has created a world that makes sense and has peopled it with characters who live, who breathe and who I actually care about. The Rainbow Orchid is a heady mix of tension, action, drama and slapstick. You should read this.”
- Silver Bullet Comics

“The characters are real, the setting is authentic, and this opening chapter hints at many plot strands. It’s got depth, charm and real polish.”
- The Review Sheet

“The interplay of the two stories immediately makes this comic far superior to most. It is not just ambitious but it works, and with élan. The different levels of the story and their attendant styles lend a tremendous feeling of depth to the whole book... It has a beautiful clean line style ... possibly the most exciting comic of the year.”
- Zum Reviews

“...unbelievably excellent...”
- Bryan Talbot (creator of The Tale of One Bad Rat and Luther Arkwright)

I really like the RAINBOW ORCHID. I discovered it along time ago. No offense but it really reminds me of TINTIN & I love the work by Herge!

I hate making promises... ThinkTank looks a great venue. I designed a voucher for them once, in that "lovely" blue and pink!

Yeah we've visted the Think Tank a few times now, and it really is pretty spectacular, what with the science museum and Imax Theatre and all that, we're very excited about taking the show into such a major direction with such a high calibre venue.

All we need now are a few more guests to confirm and we reckon we have a new premiere UK event on our hands.
Even if you don't have new stuff, it would be lovely if you could make it along Garen.

all the best,
Shane

Been a fan of your comic for some months now. Its rare that I stop and study how much effort has been put into each strip, but thats what I found myself doing with yours. :)

Waiting to read Part 2 on paper like the first one. (B+W of course)
