RE: Printing Comic books.

We literally just found a local printer and struck up a deal...so no help really ;_;
We get a slightly cheaper price because of the bulk orders - so you'd be the same there of course. But yep -nothing fancy, just our local.

Good luck!!

RE: Printing Comic books.

I guess it depends on how many pages you're gonna print. And if you go as low as 100 that's near print-on-demand. If you're pinting a squarebound book, I can't recommend Lulu.com enough, but if you're printing a saddle stick comic, comixpress.com makes good books, as well. I promise that the extra cost per book still beats having boxes of left over inventory in the basement years later. Oh, and both companies offer online shops for your readers, so you don't have to bother with that headache. (I just printed my graphic novel at lulu, that's why I'm raving about them. :) )

Thanks again.

Ahhh-Glad ya asked!

Well, I've been looking at The Print-On-Demand services, and the two I've found so far are Comixpress and Lulu.com. Comixpress has a better pricing structure as well as printing on the inside front covers, which Lulu does not.

I just got my first order, and I can confirm that they printing quality is excellent-like as good as a marvel comic good, be it in black and white ot color-They fit right in with my pro comics.

However, comixpress is also notoriously slow, and have been having printer problems in just the last couple of months-So my intial order took a month and 3 weeks to arrive.

I think this may be a little longer than usual-but they did reply personally to my e-mails!

Umm-I'm really happy with the overall quality of the paper stock and the chrispness of the blacks-the graphic novel I just finished reading looks just like something I'd buy at the comic shop!

So, I'd highly recommend them once they get their printer serviced. Be aware that they are small operation in new Jersey, and that they only take orders via Pay Pal at this time.

Their killer price point is a fullcolor graphic novel in the 72-116 page range-which can only cost paying clients the standard 14 or 16 bucks before shipping and handling.

They don't issue you an ISDN number, but Lulu does.

At this time, comixpress is still so new that there's not a lot of pro or semi-pro work on it yet, but if youre looking for good examples of works that are that level check out nate Pieko's Atland series for a good color comic, The Weevil for black and white graphic novel, and all the stuff by weirdass press is all really good stuff!

What I'm looking at doing, and this is one of the most important tutorials in the pipeline, is use POD services to establish whether the property is worth the investment of using a small press. If i sell 2000 copies, let's say, then I'll fork out the cash for a *real* run!

Or look to attempting to get a listing in the Diamond Catalog.

I think the POD services are just now arriving, and they are the single neatest thing to happen to the industry since zipatone-really!

However, theirs still some bumps!

I found a guy in Texas who got a 2 thousand copy run for something like 2000 bucks, which is a lot better than the 4 or 5 grand it used to be...

Hope this helps! Post if ya have anymore questions...

Hi there! We’re starting up this year’s Small Press Idol…and wanted to invite you to the grand unveiling of this year’s Guidelines. I apologize for the all-in-one nature of this. At this time, individuals and teams have a little over a month to get things together and be ready to post their Round 1 entries. Round 1 will last till March 25th. It’s a solid window to get a project together and qualified for Round 2 past our judge panel. If you are interested in being a contestant, this is fair warning to get a project going!
If you are a news outlet or resource of any sort, we invite you to help spread the word about Small Press Idol, and get on the official Sponsors and Supporters list on the Idol Main Page. Traditionally, the page has gotten hundreds of thousands of hits a month for the 5 months the contest runs. All we ask in return for the link placement on our prominently placed list, is a link back in some way that is fairly prominent, and that you indeed cover the contest if you are a news site. You can contact us about that right from the guidelines page.
Just want to watch the show? That’s great! Now is time to sign up at the site so you can VOTE in the rounds to come, and post comments about your favorites! We’re expecting hundreds of contestants this year. It should be a lot of fun!

Hope this message reaches you in the spirit it was intended, you are welcome to ask questions, and otherwise make sure this is for real. This is the fourth year for the SPI. Last year’s contest pages are still online. So that’s what this is about, hope it interests you!
