Hi there! We’re starting up this year’s Small Press Idol…and wanted to invite you to the grand unveiling of this year’s Guidelines. I apologize for the all-in-one nature of this. At this time, individuals and teams have a little over a month to get things together and be ready to post their Round 1 entries. Round 1 will last till March 25th. It’s a solid window to get a project together and qualified for Round 2 past our judge panel. If you are interested in being a contestant, this is fair warning to get a project going!
If you are a news outlet or resource of any sort, we invite you to help spread the word about Small Press Idol, and get on the official Sponsors and Supporters list on the Idol Main Page. Traditionally, the page has gotten hundreds of thousands of hits a month for the 5 months the contest runs. All we ask in return for the link placement on our prominently placed list, is a link back in some way that is fairly prominent, and that you indeed cover the contest if you are a news site. You can contact us about that right from the guidelines page.
Just want to watch the show? That’s great! Now is time to sign up at the site so you can VOTE in the rounds to come, and post comments about your favorites! We’re expecting hundreds of contestants this year. It should be a lot of fun!

Hope this message reaches you in the spirit it was intended, you are welcome to ask questions, and otherwise make sure this is for real. This is the fourth year for the SPI. Last year’s contest pages are still online. So that’s what this is about, hope it interests you!

The new location feature was a handy boon, I went and added all the Austinites... figured anyone living in Austin who loved comics was somebody I wanted to know. :)

You coming out to STAPLE! this year?

Thanks for the add Randy. Would you be interested in reviewing some Silent Devil comics? I can send you a PDF.

Me and the Comic Pants team are always happy to receive PDF copies... no guarantees on reviews, because we just don't get as much reviewed as we'd like, but since sending PDF copies is a lot easier and cheaper than print copies, it's our preferred method of receiving review material. Send 'em to me and I'll happily forward 'em around the group! Especially #1 issues, which we'll cover in our Wednesday Number Ones feature if you include their ship date.

Actually, that goes for anyone. If it's shipping to comics shops and we have the release date, we'll happily throw PDF reviews of first issues into our Wednesday Number One features.

Randy Lander, one of the godfathers of the online reviews! (okay, so there were others before you, but you and Don made 'em fun)

Podcasts sound like a lot of fun, but very intimidating...

It's actually not that hard, since we're all in the same physical locale and the tech side is taken care of by one of the other guys. And the tech stuff is easy for him, although I suspect it wouldn't be for me. :)

Hey Randy! Thanks for asking about FLYTRAP. I've let myself get too backed up with other (read as "paying") commitments, so Sara's started talking to a couple of other artists, both of whom are more than capable of filling my pencil-monkey role.

I could flatter myself and wish it otherwise, but I think this is actually a good thing. The industry, being what it is, was largely inclined to see her as an extension of my career, rather than a first-rate storyteller in her own right. Working with artists to whom she's, like, not married should help change that.

Cool... would love to see more, as I've really enjoyed Sara's writing on the projects y'all have done together.

Missed you at San Diego this last year... hope to see you at a Con sometime in '07.
