Thanks Pat! I enjoyed your redneck comic also. The steak on the cover of my new book is actually a slab of prime redneck flank. Mmm!
Cheers!

I surely do like your shading! Where do UK cartoonists go to chitchat? Is there something like Comicspace, or are there forums?

[ Posted by rockgardencomics on Jan 12th, 2007 6:27 AM ]...

An artists' collective from the UK just added me to their friends list. They're at illustratorslounge.com. Their site looks good.

[ Posted by afallendevil on Jan 12th, 2007 1:06 PM ]...

Thanks, I'll check that out...

Nice to meet you! Swing by the Lounge some time...

Hi there! We’re starting up this year’s Small Press Idol…and wanted to invite you to the grand unveiling of this year’s Guidelines. I apologize for the all-in-one nature of this. At this time, individuals and teams have a little over a month to get things together and be ready to post their Round 1 entries. Round 1 will last till March 25th. It’s a solid window to get a project together and qualified for Round 2 past our judge panel. If you are interested in being a contestant, this is fair warning to get a project going!
If you are a news outlet or resource of any sort, we invite you to help spread the word about Small Press Idol, and get on the official Sponsors and Supporters list on the Idol Main Page. Traditionally, the page has gotten hundreds of thousands of hits a month for the 5 months the contest runs. All we ask in return for the link placement on our prominently placed list, is a link back in some way that is fairly prominent, and that you indeed cover the contest if you are a news site. You can contact us about that right from the guidelines page.
Just want to watch the show? That’s great! Now is time to sign up at the site so you can VOTE in the rounds to come, and post comments about your favorites! We’re expecting hundreds of contestants this year. It should be a lot of fun!

Hope this message reaches you in the spirit it was intended, you are welcome to ask questions, and otherwise make sure this is for real. This is the fourth year for the SPI. Last year’s contest pages are still online. So that’s what this is about, hope it interests you!

Thinking of launching my speechless comic on the 1st of January 2007. Perhaps one day the main character will encounter an army of mummified beings! Not sure what format will be best... Portrait or landscape? Portrait is more traditional... But for the web maybe landscape is better due to the nature of computer screens. What do ya think?

Launch it! Maybe you could mix it up and do both portrait and landscape. And you know I have to vote for mummified beings, too. There are so many kinds of mummies, you know? I've never drawn the Peruvian style. Have you ever seen those? They're usually dressed in native finery, with maybe feather headgear, and their knees are drawn up to their chest when they're buried. These are some butt ugly mummies, and they were often buried in huge clay jars. I think they would scare my regular mummies half to death. New Years is the perfect time to launch a new comic. I'm launching one new weekly department the first week of January: celebrity satire. They're making it too easy for me, so I have to take advantage of all the material out there.

I may not even base my new comic in this galaxy, so they would have to be alien mummies! In fact, I might not ever draw humans in it... To make it a bit different, although there will still be humanoid characters of course.

Alien mummies? Now you have my attention! Frankly, I wish I'd thought of that.

Do you have a link for the Fite comic?

Aha, found it! I see that the few speech bubbles that exist contain pictures or symbols rather than words... That's cool, but I think I'm gonna go even more minimal than that!

I once made the very drunken mistake of voicing my political beliefs to a crowded room of Thanksgiving Texans when Bush turned up to thank the troops in Iraq about 3 years ago! lets just say there was a clash of interests... especially when some of the Blue Rinse Brigade fell to their knees when Dubya appeared on the screen. Amongst tears and some wailing I heard one old lady proclaim him the son of God ( much like John Wayne did in the Greatest Story Ever Told!) At this point I seem to remember saying something along the lines of " If God made Bush in his own image then he must be a F***ing moron as well!" Ill advised it has to be said...

Very cool comic. Doing a single panel strip MUST be the most challenging writing task. Hell, I can barely get the story told in three!

Hi Pat- thanks for taking a gander at my work! Yeah, I've experimented a lot over the years, like to vary my work to keep it interesting and I think certain styles suit certain genres etc. going to be concentrating on a more cartoony style for a bit as I enjoy doing it and the stories I'm writing prefer it as well! Glad you feel inspired as much as I was by reading your work!
I'm not sure what the time difference is between here and K.C ( Kansas City? ), I know it's 8 hours behind in Texas as my father lives in Houston so I field phone calls to and from him around midnight!

Thanks Pat. I got a chance to look at your stuff and I really like how consistent and funny your sense of humor is. It made me keep hitting the next button.
Good work and keep putting it out there.

I have come bits on bobs on myspace ( www.myspace.com/chinook23 ), but not a lot as you really have to scale down the quality and I got a bit disillusioned with it! I keep meaning to put more up but spend my time more wisely creating. Or so I tell myself!!! Going to use this space more to put my comic work and cartoons up as it makes more sense, in the mean time I'm frying BIG fish and have a clear plan in my mind and a direction I want to take and chucking myself on that pyre so to speak! Would love to do more one off cartoon panels as I really get off on it, that's why I really liked your work. Especially the drawing style- it's a dying art ( hand drawn cartoons ), with only, it seems to me, the syndicated making any head way! Having said that, I'm pleasantly surprised to see a number of good works on this site. I have spent years( aeon's ) teaching myself different inking techniques from brush work, dip pen, and fibre tip to all manner of weird contraptions such as cardboard( I kid you not! ) and trimmed feathers! I'm always pleased to see someone who has become a master... or in your case a mistress( Rawwaagh!)of their medium!
It has to be said at this point that it is %am here in the UK, and I'm still working, albeit very slowly as I've drained a good bottle of Red and it's waaaaay passsed my bed time! If you find yourself in Blighty, head to Brighton- it's the Mutts nuts! Keep up the correspondence, good to liaison with like minded people... put not at this time in the mornin' !
keep'n it real Chinook!!

Such a strangely cool mixed bag of recurring themes in your cartoons. I also love the way you handle color. The work looks great.
