Sophie with a chainsaw! Love it the most. Your comic's still my favorite.

Dee! You've been #1 on WCN all morning, now. Guess it's close to dinner time for you in the UK. Congratulations, man!

Your last two strips have been particular favorites of mine, Scott. It's always a pleasure to see what you have created. xoxo

Scott, the comic I drew from your caption is running today. Thanks again! I enjoyed drawing it.

As always, I enjoyed seeing your new comic today. You surprise and amaze! You asked for comments about changing the site, and I have one for you. I wish you would add more contrast between your background color and your comment text. Otherwise, you need no amendment, ever! Ummm, unless you ever guest strip John for fun, sometime. xoxo

It's good to hear from you, Pat. And thanks. I will look to change that. I guess there's no point in writing it if no one can read it. Take care.

Thanks, guys! Killer lawn gnomes? I wish I'd thought of that one.

Heh, thanks! Yeah, there's plenty of whacky things going on with the gnomes as each issue comes out. I think you'd dig it...

I've been experimenting with satire and such, to see if people like it. They seem to be like you and have other favorites, perhaps, but I'm getting a lot more emails about the satire. It's so much fun to change it up and try new things. It's fun for me, anyway, but I can't vouch for the readers. You could do absolutely anything with Pint of Ink.

[ Posted by rockgardencomics to pint_of_ink on Feb 8th, 2007 6:54 AM ]...

Dee, I'm loving Pint of Ink! You have several fans at my day job, and they always tell me when you have a new one (as if I didn't already know). Your genealogy of American presidents really tickled me.

Wow! Thanks for the kind words Pat. I've noticed RGC taking a more satirical path of late as well. Though my recent fav was the "two songs stuck in the head at the same time". Yeah, it happens...

[ Posted by rockgardencomics to TonyD on Feb 2nd, 2007 7:43 PM ]...

Thanks for befriending me, Tony! I'm looking forward to seeing your work. What a great career you've built for yourself! I heard that this is the last year for the Simpsons. That's an American tragedy! But it looks like you'll be a sure thing to work on the next big thing.

[ Posted by rockgardencomics to robhamm on Jan 10th, 2007 6:28 PM ]...

Hey, Rob! Thanks for adding me to your friends list. We're practically neighbors (I'm in KC). I saw your posts in the WCN forum, when you were considering having a mirror site at WCN, but I'm not sure if you ever actually joined. Did you? I admire the style of your comic, and its large readership! I drew black and white for a very long time but finally went to color. Talk to you soon.

Hey, thank YOU!
:-)
And incidentally, I used to live in Roeland Park, too.

We should form some sort of in-person meeting group for local comickers--think the KC folk would mind coming out to Lawrence? That'd give the Topeka and Wichita people a little less of a drive.

Hi, Mike! Thanks for adding me to your list. I draw a half-assed single panel comic, which is a line from your comic, but I do, actually, draw one. Google for Rock Garden Comics sometime. Talk to you later.

Rock Garden Comics is great! I like your style, and it's very funny! My only complaint is it takes too long loading the page, so I can see the next strip. Very cool though! Thanks

Welcome to comicspace, Tom! It looks like you're a serious comics fan. I've never used watercolor for my comics. You know how it goes: I got started with colored pencil, and so I've just stuck with that.

Hi,
Thanks for the Welcome.
I have never used colored pencil before.
I do some pen and ink and some air-brushing...but, I enjoy watercolors the most and have stuck with that.
I would like to see some of your art.
I hope you had a Great New Years.
Take Care,
Tom

Thank you. Not sure if I'll be able to produce 999,999 comics! The six digit number is symbolic of the panel layout (6 squares, arranged 3 x 2). There won't always be six panels though, could be anything from 1 - 6, but still based on the 3 x 2 grid. The Watchmen graphic novel inspired me to do it as that was almost all based on a 3 x 3 panel structure...

Oh yeah - I can't be bothered to fill in vacuum black all the time, so I often leave it white with stars.

Ah - changed it to a maximum of 999 comic strips - more realistic...

Very interesting - lots of movement and action. We have a comic with no words on Webcomicsnation. It's called Fite! No words can be refreshing.

The first strip for Malevolent Urge is online today!

[ Posted by rockgardencomics to blakelylaw on Jan 1st, 2007 1:08 PM ]...

I have just spent some quality time on findlaw.com, nolo.com, and many other sites I found after Googling "intellectual property". Unfortunately, it seems that parody, in general, and satire, in particular, have become lawsuit targets in cases designed to shrink the definition of "fair use". It pretty much scared the pants off me. Still, I will continue investigating, because I don't feel like I've learned enough about it, yet. No wonder more cartoonists don't draw celebrity satire!

Remember a couple of years ago, the question of using Princess Di's likeness in X-Statics came up, and Marvel decided to go another direction. Often creators will change just enough of a character so that it is different, but you know who they are talking about. For instance, using an idiot blonde celebrity named London Marriott for Paris Hilton, etc. It is a crazy world! Now you see why I like criminal law... a LOT more fun!

[ Posted by rockgardencomics to blakelylaw on Jan 1st, 2007 11:59 AM ]...

I appreciate all your astute comments, Tom, and I will investigate those websites today. And I didn't even think about visiting a law library! All I was looking for here was a clue, and you were gracious enough to provide it. Personally, I have always loved the celebrity satire in Mad magazine. I was only six years old when I saw my first Mad, and that moment is forever burned into my brain. We all have those special comic moments, right?

I have lots of special comics moments... of course, at this age, I have senior moments as well. Thankfully, I do not remember the senior moments. Good luck! I just looked at NOLO, and they have some great stuff on there. And, of course, GOOGLE has been my favorite research tool on the internet, and if you put "intellectual property" (in quotations, of course) into the search bar, you should get quite a few good articles.

I should note, my main area of expertise is criminal law, so if you have any criminal law questions, feel free to ask!

Thank you so much, Thomas, for adding me to your friends list. Your avatar rules, and Happy New Year to you, too. Thomas, I need to ask you a question that affects the future of (my) comics (ha). Would you know where I could find online information about the specifics of copyright law? What I need to know is this: if I draw Harry Potter or Madonna or any famous person, either real or imaginary, am I breaking the law if I post it on the web? So far, the only website I've found that addresses this at all is starvingartistslaw.com, and it's not really helpful for that issue. If that's outside your area of the law, I understand. Political cartoonists never seem to worry about that sort of thing, but the other intellectual property questions appear to form a gray area. If I'm wrong about this, please forgive me. I love to draw, but I'm not as informed as I'd like to be about the law. And I'm not putting you on the spot. "I don't know" would be a plenty good answer.

I love the answer of "I don't know," as I use it a lot. However, I do know some of the fundamentals of copyright law (also known as "intellectual property", a phrase you may want to google). Use of a celebrity without their permission is prohibited. And one can see why; they are paid based upon their own efforts. The same is true with literary characters like Harry Potter; his creator is entited to all profits generated from his likeness. One can see that if you published a comic called THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF HARRY POTTER, that it would be enormously popular, based on someone else's hard work, publicity efforts, etc. Now, this is true UNLESS the work being done is satire (humorous), which is allowed by the US Supreme Court. It is recognized that a person who has put themselves into the public spotlight has fewer protections as to their name as does a Shmoe like myself. Satire is protected (which is why the political cartoonists, The Daily Show, etc can use celebrities' names, likenesses, etc). One place to go to for research is www.findlaw.com, which has a LOT of information for free. You can also look at www.nolo.com, another place with lots of info plus inexpensive books. There should also be a law library nearby you if you want to do some good, old-fashioned research; I have found law librarians to be particularly nice and helpful!

I hope this has not been too long-winded... and a note of CYA: I am licensed to practice in the State of Utah ONLY, and cannot give advice legally outside the State. Good luck! Let me know how things go!

Mark, I was born in KC and live in Roeland Park, but I had no idea that CCN existed. I've Googled myself silly, looking for the rest of you. And here you are. Thanks so much for adding me to your list. I'll check out your forum and look at all the comics on your site. Thanks again!

I tried to link to your comic, using the button on your homepage, but it didn't work for me. To do it, I put your button in Photobucket, copied the html, and tried to plunk it in the lefthand adspace of the adspace section of our WCN control panel. Is that how you would do it? If not, where can I get the snippet of Javascript to make it happen? I'm just a lowtech girl, looking for a clue.

Thanks, and the same to you! As long as we get to draw, I know it'll be a good year.
