| Bulletin: | Poking around on YouTube, I've come across an AMAZING documentary produced by the BBC in the 1980s. It's called SUPERMAN: THE COMIC STRIP HERO. It of course begins with the creation of Superman in the 1930s, and features some very rare interviews with people like (Superman creators) Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, (Superman actors) Kirk Alyn, Christopher Reeve, and David Prowse, even famed anti-comic book activist Dr. Fredric Wertham! It also has interviews with comic book figures Art Spiegelman and Wil Eisner. The hour long documentary is broken into 5 parts, and examines Superman as a representation of ... * american values * american commercialism * anti-superhero feminism * nazi values * anarchy * chastity * dangerous childhood fantasies You can watch the first part on YOUTUBE, and it will have links to each subsequent part after that. It's a really interesting and thorough examination of Superman, with some AMAZING interviews! I would love to find this on DVD somewhere. Check it out!!! |
